Cautious animal on Friday night

Body

Jackal, Golden jackal     Šaakal or harilik šaakal          Canis aureus

A comparatively new animal in our nature: only in 2011 they were thought to exist in Estonia and in 2012 the first animal was shot in the Matsalu area.

In their traditional habitats their social living and cleverness is valued  despite the fact that they clearly cause damage in the surrounding nature.

All our wild animals fight for survival but to pass by an easily obtainable delicacy – we know of no other comparable species except wolves (more than half a century ago the poisoning of predatory animals was quite common). May animals really carry along their one-time experiences in their genetic code?

And now a new species which we still know only scantily and whose lifestyle and behaviour in a new habitat we cannot predict moves around in our nature.

Every piece of knowledge is useful for an overview.

How many jackals do live in West Estonia now? According to the estimate of zoologists it might be up to fifty individuals. But jackals have also been seen in Vormsi and Saaremaa
