On Thursday November 15th the annual winter bird counting season on the mainland started. The Estonian Ornithological Society invites both experienced ornithologists and newcomers to join in.

During the winter the birds should  be counted on three occasions in a territory and path of one’s own choice. The first counting period is on November 15 – 28. The observer must recognize wintering  birds (up to 40 species) from their calls and exterior. For the count a path about 10 km long should be chosen that may run through different landscapes.

The counts should be done in good weather and in daylight. All observed  birds should be noted, the data entered on the observation form for the count and sent to Jaanus Elts:

jaanus.elts@eoy.ee

The data may be submitted after each count or all together, by the end of March 2019 at the latest.

Guidelines for the winter bird count and the observation forms are available on the Estonian Ornithological Society home page LINK

New participants should contact Jaanus Elts before making the  count.

In Estonia the winter bird counts started in 1987.

The aim of the counts is  in the first place to determine the distribution and relative numbers of wintering birds on the mainland and the changes in these numbers during one winter as well as over the years
