The closer to winter we are the more difficult it is for the cautious creatures to give up easily available mouthfuls

Jackal; Golden Jackal     Šaakal or harilik šaakal        Canis aureus

In what kind of landscape might our jackals thrive? A study has compared the habitats of jackals in Europe and in potential regions in the Baltic countries; we will briefly look at Estonia .

Our jackal camera is situated in a coastal pasture; coastal meadows, juniper areas, heath and moorland as well as natural grassland. Inland wet areas and their reed banks. In coastal regions thus there are suitable habitats only in western and north-western Estonia; however, these are not strict rules for the easily adaptable animal - time will show.

It is well known that jackals evade territories where there is a strong wolf population – they are food competitors. The reason for migration is held to be the warming of the climate causing snow cover to remain for a  shorter time and to be thinner, but scientists do not predict a significant increase of the population in Estonia.

Next time we will look at the influence of the jackals on the biological diversity of our nature

The review is based on Peep Männil’s paper in the December issue of magazine „Eesti jahimees“.
