Caterpillars of buff tip on tree leaf

Buff tip moth      Kuututlane    Phalera bucephala

As imago, or moth, the buff tip is a master of camouflage and in the rest position looks like a broken birch twig. Flying, we could meet them from May until July (see lower photo).

However, the beautiful caterpillars of the buff tip turned up; their youth they spend together in groups, the fully developed caterpillars move around singly.

The caterpillars of the moth that feed on several species can be found wherever there are deciduous trees suitable for food, also on limes and damage them quite substantially.

Our large islands were left without heavy rain today. The second half of summer has really been stormy but the rain has fallen quite varyingly across Estonia.

Fattening-up time has started for badgers. Nature, abandoned orchards and fields offer a rich variety of choices. So they don’t go foraging only in the evening but also at early light when something says that a little more to eat would be nice.

The silver Y is a common species arriving as a migrant in Estonia. It manages to fly even to Lapland. The moths arrive in Estonia with warm winds from southern Europe, from the second half of May to October. In summers a local population may also develop in Estonia. The moths can be seen in meadows, fields, forests, gardens etc.

Note the dachshound in the video, excitedly standing on the road. By the way, the dachshound breed takes its name from the badger (Dachs – badger in German) and the short legs of the dachshound are bred precisely for getting into the burrows of a badger sett.

In the video clip from the evening of August 16th firstly an adult badger is visible and then suddenly, running with quick steps, clearly slimmer creatures – the cubs of this year. How long we have waited for this sight in the badger camera!
Video captured by Fleur.in the badger camera forum.
