Are two eggs better than one?

If you have a choice, then surely. But in the Estonian white-tailed eagles’ (Suvi and Sulev) nest with webcam there is not much choice – only one egg remains in the nest.

The second egg was broken on the morning of April 5th and the remnants  were removed by the adults from the nest.

Evidently we will never know why one of the eggs broke. The possibilities  are many but an unfortunate accident is most likely.

In the same nest area it has occurred earlier (2013) that one of the eggs broke in the nest during the incubation. There were three eggs then, from the second no chick hatched, so only one eaglet grew up in  the nest.  That young ringed bird was seen in Lithuania nearly three years later.

Now we have to hope that at some time between April 24-27 an eagle chick will hatch. It is not known whether the broken egg was laid as the first or second one – on that too the time of the possible  hatching will depend .
