January 11th

Good Morning :hi:

Winter is directing in Riga.

Image

The other nests in Latvia are also very wintry. It looks pretty. :innocent:
If my weather app is not wrong, it will be really crisp at the end of the week  and snow should also fall by then. I hope all of our birds and animals find enough food and a good resting place.
It's good to have real winter again.

It was quiet today compared to the last two days. All feelings and activities in the snow freeze. :whistling: :rotf:
The clearance service is busy doing its rounds ....

Well, when I have time off and on, I've read back the years again. We had the topic that it is not yet the courtship season and that it is normal that hawks are not yet active. I'll stick with it ... according to my readings (forum and other sources) over the past few months, our couple should be more active. I am not saying that I am expecting an egg in the next few days. But hawks prepare their season during this time. Margo (female) & Misters Y. (male) documented the 2016/17 season very well.
November '16 visit with gifts. Regularly.
December '16 regular to frequent by both nest inhabitants including nest work.
January '17 both were regularly at the nest.
Read from here:

https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... &start=560

I will stay at the nest and will squeak when I am lucky enough to catch an activity. But I see the chance slim.

Stay healthy and take care of yourselves so that we can still experience one or the other miracle together! :innocent:

January 12th

Good morning :hi:

I heard something interesting.
10:08:10-12 clearly heard a long high call. I cannot assign him without a doubt. Young hawk, sparrowhawk, I even thought of buzzard at first. However, I most strongly suspect a juvenile hawk.

10:19:48/49 to hear again. Farther away and hard to hear. The wind tugs at the microphone and crows have accompanied the call.
Hmm ... at least.

10:19:56/57 owl? :slap: What does it sound like? (Can not be. Anyway, I'll make a little video for the sound)

January 13th

Good morning everyone :hi:

I've been winding through the night hoping to hear Mr. Tawny owl. Of course not.

Despite the new moon, the snow makes the night shine. Great! :innocent:

Image

02:22:05 - 02:23 a krakrakra sounds.
As far as I know, crows are not nocturnal. It must have annoyed her a little.
02: 56/57 the protest gets louder, almost gurgling. There are now several crows. Until well after 03:05 the crows kept nagging.
Hm, the people who live there will have had an annoyed half of the night. :whistling:
Well, the morning brings the familiar howling of the seagulls again.

09:05:22 - 25 It works! An adult hawk sugared. :innocent: Without a doubt.

10:52:03, 10:52:17 - 21 pathetic, warming. Juvenile hawk? Sparrowhawk? Very insecure ... .

?

10:05:50 again
I think juvenile hawk. :puzzled:

I have to go. Have a nice day everyone!

Good morning @all :hi:

I had an idea about the calls that I somehow can't sort out.

(Juvenile and owl?)

I remembered that last season a nest of a Black Woodpecker was seen in the neighborhood. Woodpeckers are vocal marvels. They always confuse me and manage to get me to confuse their calls with WTE or hawks. :whistling:

Hear the shouts and song (first and second selection) with pleasure to the end. (The call is interesting in second half.)
Would it be an option?
(Because of the owl the main thing)

Otherwise, it was a bumpy day yesterday. The background noise was much and the birds like crows and gulls were again much confused in the first half of the day. From our hawks no sign or I missed it.

At least it was a nice winter day temporarily. :innocent:

Image

12:22 A crow spies on the nest. 8-)
Observed more often in the last days: there is usually a second one sitting nearby. So also in this moment. Soon the crow flies back to its mate.

I wish everyone a nice and healthy time!

Today and tomorrow I can stay little at the camera.

Ps: It gets very cold. :/

Good morning everybody! :hi:

10:22/23 Crows nervous or quarrelsome
10:54:05 /17 -22 / 32-33 again the timid call of the juvenile. :innocent:

(comparison)

It's crisp in Riga. My weather app currently says -15°C.

Sometimes it is difficult to catch calls. The background noise is often irritating.
However (with the help of my headphones)

Now in distance

11:27:05 juvenile
11:31:08 adult
11:31:24 , 11:32:00 - 04, 11:32:32, 11:32:46 juvenile

I wonder if it could be A97 or A98?
Or another juvenile trying for the spring?

Goshawks can breed as early as the following year of their hatch.

And once again the juvenile hawk:
(To be heard in spite of chainsaw and the barking *nest dog* :2thumbsup: )

11:38:08, 11:38:54 - 11:39:04, 11:39:17/18

I'm glad to hear that!
If they can't be seen, at least they can be heard.

I need to take a break. Hopefully I won't miss too much.
(edit: As far as nothing else happens. Of course, it is not a guarantee when traced back. There are always time gaps ... I am curious to see what happens next. Will we eventually see who the teenager is? And will we eventually hear or see both of our couple? :shake: )

A pleasant day to you all!

A quiet day.
I have vacation and hoped that I finally have time to report a lot. :whistling:

One woodpecker I have to offer.
10:58 - 11:17 his drumming can always be heard. :innocent:

For good ears an excerpt:

Continue to have a good time to all. Stay safe! :2thumbsup:

It remains quiet. Or better - no activity from our hawks in this eyrie.
The camera must be rebuilt. Somewhere they are.

For connoisseurs and because it is so rare, the call from this morning. The only one so far today ... .
And because not sure how much we can see or hear for this next season - recorded. :rotf:

11:57:46/52

14:14/15 A male bullfinch lingers in the nest with a leaf (oak leaf?)

Does he have female companionship? (Very likely .)
I can not see it and previously great tits were active around the nest.

Another day over ... again quiet but in front of beautiful scenery. :innocent:

January 22nd

10:40:40/42 Juvenile
An unhappy crow disturbs the sound and I have my gurgling washing machine in the background but I am sure. I checked several times.

Also now, 10:54 Loud crowing around the nest tree.
I don't know if there was a hawk in between or if he is the cause. I'll have to rewind it again. The stream is running minimally on mobile. Too inaccurate.

Here's to a hopefully exciting day here and a healthy day for you!

11:22:06 (-22?) juvenile (not sure)

11:36:40/41 Minicall adult.
(sounded like interrupted)

It's kind of choppy today, noise. Lots of background noise and the crows are hardly quiet.
In between, tits and bullfinches can be heard. :innocent:

Okay, the afternoon was lively in terms of the environment. Chainsaws, children, Rescue car, crows and seagull ... our nest dog :2thumbsup: ... nice to hear everything. Some familiarity (music was missing) what belongs to the last months of observation of this nest.
Also observing the Juvenile who fled the factory area at the first loud acoustic ...because he probably hatched and fledged in quiet, rural area and these noises mean danger for him.

https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... &start=460
(November 11th)

Or is it even him that we hear almost every day?

I always, every day have a head full of questions.

For me, it is quite certain that this eyrie will only be a secondary eyrie for this season.
It's normal for falcons to change. They are owners of several nurseries.
Also I wonder if our pair Boka & Luijs still exist in this constellation?
I wonder because there is this juvenile that doesn't seem to leave the territory. Breeding hawks in a territory. ..never or rarely exist?

The autumn will be interesting.
Should our pair of hawks or another choose this nest, they would start visiting it regularly.
I hope Mr. Zacmanis and his helpers will let this camera exist.

I personally will continue to follow this camera but actually document less.
I don't want to list side things that just bore others or are irrelevant off topic. A little bit I feel like Bubo ... document a lot but nothing happens and in the end the camera is removed. :dunno:

However, I will continue to report sightings (Goshawks only). Sightings only - no calls.

By the way ... the snow is melting faster today than my hope for a good saison here. :rotf:

January 23rd

Hello together :hi:

I know I'm looking pretty stupid right now. I really only wanted to document sightings but today has been a nice, lively day so far. I also have thoughts that I really need to share otherwise I'll choke on them. :rotf:

In advance ... please let us know if you would like to have verifiable sources.
I've been reading so much for months and extremely for weeks.... I don't attach the sources to every thought but in a pinch I find them. :)

Let' go ...

10:58:14 call adult (at distance)

11:26:26/29 call adult (even further away)

11:49:07 Woodpecker croaks

11:56:04/05 call adult (closer)

11:56:29 again Woodpecker

And during all the crows were like an army today. Sometimes further ...sometimes very close but always in alarm.

12:05 A gentle chirp near the micron. :innocent:
In fact, the tits are tireless in the nest today. They take with them what the nest has to offer.

13:34:34 call adult
13:34:42 call adult (very short)

13:34:50/52 call adult (very short, very quiet or far away)

14:19:20 Oh, a nuthatch in the nest.

14:22:35 call adult (short, quiet)

.....

About the calls:
I have read that mates in courtship communicate with only short calls. Only a short one Sometimes also very quietly. If the partner does not react, they make calls that sound like juvenile calls.

This is of course popcorn in my mind but it may explain why in the last two to three days the calls sounded so stalled. And ... was it possibly not a juvenile?
Well, that short 'gjak' may actually not have been choppy but the sign among partners.

Maybe there will be surprises in the next few days. :innocent:

14:54:32 - 38 call adult
14:55:00/05 call adult

14:55:25 - 59 juvenile !!!

There was reading that hawks are best heard in the late afternoon hours.
Our goshawks call so far mainly in the morning.

Today is different. :shake:

16:22:04 / 09

Woodpecker or hawk (short 'gjak')?
According to the voice color, both are possible.

January 24th

Hello together :hi:

Small update from the day so far.
It started quietly ...the snow continues to melt and there was a gray inertia over the territory of our hawks. In the meantime, the feathered residents got going. I must try to keep my records under control. :slap:

10:24:16/18 Call adult (clear and beautiful)

11:20:17 'Gjak' ???
(I have rewound several times and I am getting more and more uncertain. It is barely audible.)

11:20:22 -30
11:20:36 -38 Call juvenile

11:21:00 A small mutiny begins.
The meeting participants shout in confusion and Polly throws away the pen.
What I could sort:
11:21:02 juvenile
11:21:30 - 37 juvenile
11:21:45 - 53 juvenile

11:22:00 Gulls, crows raise prodest.
All call througheinder.
The youthful voice is heard constantly.
11:22:54 the juvenile now sounds closer and the whole thing moves a little closer to the nest tree.
11:23:26 /'35 Jay?
I put question marks because woodpeckers sometimes imitate this cawing too.

11:23:35 'Gjak'?

11:24:16 adult closer
11:24:24 Jay?

(11:21:00 - 11:25:00)

11:52:44 adult
11:53:42 adult

In the meantime, the situation has relaxed again.

As I write, I can hear the adult calling out incessantly. He seems to be very excited.
"Throw your heart across the river and swim after it."
