April 18th.
Happy to see, that YRK was here for feeding her Pippy
8:56 am arrival by Mom.
A little preening and off she goes
Dad is still absent. Not so good.

Good morning all
sova, you're welcome
Dad returned
OGK returned after more than four weeks absence.
He is unfortunately injured hopefully this is superficial and he can recover from this. We have no way of knowing what has happened while he was out over the ocean.

Sharyn Broni (DOC) Mod
Thank you all for your messages of concern and support following OGK’s visit yesterday afternoon.
Over the last month, most of DOC’s work with wildlife has been on hold around New Zealand while under alert level 4, unless it’s essential for animal welfare. This is so we complied with the government directive to stay home to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
During this time, we have been monitoring the colony remotely. Concerned by OGK’s injury, a ranger was approved to visit the colony yesterday afternoon to ensure the safety of OGK.
The ranger searched the headland, but it appears OGK has flown out to sea again. It’s a good sign that he was able to feed the webcam chick, place some weight on his injured leg and take off.
We will continue remotely monitoring the colony and OGK’s condition when he next returns. As mentioned in an earlier update, we are hoping the leg injury is superficial as it is not unheard of for leg injuries to mend naturally on their own.
We are currently working through what the implications of moving to an Alert Level 3 environment will be on DOC’s work programmes.
Thanks again for your support during this challenging time, we really appreciate it. You may be interested to hear that over the last month we have received more than 186,500 views on our Royal Cam live stream compared to 87,300 views from this time last year.
Royal Cam key messages:
The Department of Conservation is concerned for the wellbeing of OGK, the father of this year’s Royal Cam chick.
OGK briefly returned to Pukekura/Taiaroa Head on Tuesday after a four week absence.
The Royal Cam live stream camera captured him with an injured leg as he struggled to move and feed his chick on Tuesday afternoon.

While our work with northern royal albatross has been on hold, we have been monitoring the colony remotely. Concerned by OGK’s injury, a ranger was approved to visit the colony this afternoon to ensure the safety of OGK.

We have no way of knowing how he has become injured while he was flying at sea over the last four weeks.
Albatross chicks rely on both parents to feed them. If parents are absent for several weeks DOC rangers would normally
monitor the chick’s weight and supplementary feed it if necessary to ensure they are consuming enough food.
We are currently working through what the implications of moving to an Alert Level 3 environment will be on DOC’s work programmes.
If OGK returns we will know. As well as our rangers, a global online audience is keeping a constant eye on the Royal
Cam chick, with more than 186,500 views over the last month compared to 87,300 views from this time last year.

It is a bit better than last year (not that hysterical cam switching) but the audio is disturbed by their own drones
It is said to work worldwide....

Today the Royalcam chick is 86 days old and was fed by YRK (mum) this morning, she landed at 9.40am NZT. The chick should weigh about 6kg by now.
We continue to look out for OGK in the hope that we can access any injuries.

update Pippa
Today Pippa was weighed and she got supplementary feeding.
Info by Sharyn Broni, DOC:
Today was a momentous occasion as this was the first full weigh and supplementary feeding since March. A glorious day out on the headland, but quite unlike any other day we have ever had. The gulls have left for the winter and the car park is empty, it all seemed exactly the same except somehow completely different.
Great care is taken when working due to Covid-19 and we are hoping that you are still maintaining social distancing and staying safe. Lets keep moving down the alert levels.
The day began with weighing all chicks, well 22 of them as 2 would not tolerate being handled. Since the last weigh day the chicks have about doubled in size and need to be handled differently. The older chicks are quite an armful now and it will not be long until they start loosing down and start looking like adult albatross.

The little Pipa is a * big * treasure of gold. I just find it sad that from a certain age they are so much alone. But yes, that's the way it is.
Thanks Liz
