INFO Sharyn Broni DOC (Mod and Ranger)
Banding of all 24 chicks occurred today. There was no weighing due to the wind which was up around 40 knots.

All chicks have a permanent Stainless Steel band on the right leg and a green plastic band with a 2 digit number on the left leg. The Royalcam chicks number is 50.

Glue is used to make the plastic band stronger.

When these young birds come back in 5 or so years time the green bands will be replace with a 2 or 3 colour combination.

Banding tells us who each bird is, how old they are, who they breed with etc.

Look out tomorrow morning at 9am for the top 5 name suggestions for you to vote on.

Thanks to all 2500 people who made submissions!

Atawhai-Pippa does impressive flight exercises :2thumbsup:

Sharyn Broni (DOC)
Today Atawhai is 229 days old and weighs 7.9kg. Her weight is tracking normally as these chicks do loose weight prior to fledging. She had been located 100m down the hill in front of the Hcam view this morning. It is likely that she has hovered in stages to get all the way down there. It is not clear whether OGK fed her today, he did however feed her on Sunday and it is likely that an unidentified parent fed her yesterday.

A lot of questions have been asked about what happens next for these chicks. Find information on toroa (albatross) behaviour on this page.
https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-a ... royal-cam/

Once a chick fledges they are on their own in terms of learning to fly in ocean conditions and finding their own food. They can smell food from about 20km away and will head towards that. The Toroa (Northern Royal Albatross) feed off the edge of the continental shelf on the east coast of the South Island before taking the long 9000km journey on the wind to the Humbolbt Current. This current one of the richest areas of marine life in the world runs up the edge of the continental shelf of the western side of South America. The chicks who have fledged spend at least a year in this location before returning to Pukekura/Taiaroa Head at approximately 5 years of age.

Atawhai our Royal Cam chick has fledged!

After weeks of flapping on ground, holding her wings out facing the wind and getting in some much-needed hovering practice, our recently named Royal Cam star Atawhai has gained enough strength to take-off from the headland and leave her nest.

At 230 days old she'll now fly and navigate the ocean as she leaves Pukekura/Taiaroa Head to feed off the edge of the continental shelf on the east coast of the South Island, before taking the long 9000km journey to one of the richest areas of marine life in the world, the continental shelf of the western side of South America.

This is not a goodbye but a very long 'see-ya-later' as we'll hopefully see Atawhai return to the colony in 4 - 10 years, where she might be the parent of the next Royal Cam Star…

Atawhai has been marvellous company and we wish her well on the next stage of her amazing voyage across the Pacific Ocean, Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa. We can all help out by reducing plastic consumption and only supporting sustainable, albatross safe fishing industries.

It is with very special thanks to Cornell Bird Lab that we have had such an amazing view of Atawhai's life so far. https://www.allaboutbirds.o...

She is now the 10th chick to fledge, getting a little ahead of herself, 14 are left to go.

We may get to see OGK and YRK again as they will keep coming in until they are sure that she has gone. The cam has been left on her old nest for the night but we will zoom out again in the morning to get a chance of albatross activity in the area.

Thanks for watching.

I don't know, should I be happy or mourn?
I'm very happy for the Pipa, but it's an uncertain journey.
I wish all the best to sweet Pipa ... a good life, hopefully we'll all see Pipa again, but it's a long time ...

Liz, thank you very much for bringing the world of the albatrose a little closer to us. :2thumbsup:
