Royal Albatross - Taiaroa Head - New Zealand

28.02.2021 - 07:20 a.m.: LGK considers leaving - stands up and slowly walks away.

07:30 a.m.: He walks out of sight.

Liz: I saw the episode you mention: He protects his chick really well. And when he tried to
fit the chick under himself - what a sight.

Royal Albatross - Taiaroa Head:

28.02.2021, 19:38:

A third party comes over and settles near chick and its parents. Could be neighbour female GLG but I am not sure (Liz: pls correct me if I am wrong). Gets up three minutes later and leaves shortly after.

2:33 p-m. What a brave chick. The neighbor albatross landed in front of it. Little one reacted like Dad or Mom, brave and determined to defend his life and the nest. I was very amazed! it looks cute when a little chick reacts like that.

2:36 This chick reacts completely differently to Pippa. Pippa was always hungry. No matter when a parent came, they would not stop begging until they were fed. She didn't care about a long welcoming ceremony, she just wanted to eat.
I think he just said that he successfully chased away an adult albatross (men always exaggerate a bit). Later, LGL sat down on him. It looks crazier the bigger he gets. This cannot be seen in the video 🤣

4:28 Albatross landed on the nest and covered the chick with his wing. :rotf: Not everyone is allowed to cover the chick!
I don't want to know which swear words LGL used LOL

12:06 the adorable chick Is working on the nest with it's beak & paddles.
It's incredibly cute. The Royal Cam Chick is very busy making the nest comfortable. I was fascinated by how intensely it works. It turns several times spread straw and enlarged the nest.

Royalcam update

Today the Royalcam chick is 37 days of age and is still being brooded part-time by parents. The chicks weigh is 3kg as of 10.18am this morning. That is a 800g increase on last week. No wonder the chick was not hungry over night when LGL tried to encourage some feeding. Now that LGK and LGL are experienced parents they are brooding their chick longer than they did with Karere 2 years ago.

3:56 pm So cute! LGL and Chick are sleeping

The chick noticed Henry first. It is clacking with its little beak. Mom woke up and seemed to be thinking what? Where? Ahh I see! Clack, clack,clack- Kid I will defend you. :rotf:

9:27 early morning - Video by Lady Hawk!
Ranger Colin and Chris McCormack came to weigh the chicks in the colony today and our chick came in at a whopping 3.0kg! That is a 800g increase this past week! That basket is going to be too small soon! 💕 LGL spends some time preening her chick and it does some cute wing stretches! Thank you for watching!

Thank you Lady Hawk! :D

I'm so busy that I couldn't do it anymore :slap:

17:42 Henry is doing the snake dance for the chick
Chick did not enjoy ! They think it's a girl because of her behavior. I think she's a bit hostile too, no matter who comes 🤣

18:49 Red visit the Royal Cam chick.
Red is preening the chick.. The little one is not happy about it
18:53 he/she leaves

Here is a panoramic view looking towards the Royalcam and Richdale's Observatory.

This image was taken on Sunday when the Royalcam chick was still alone, the cam is top left. The neighbours chick on the left is being brooded by GLG. On the right over the edge and practically directly behind the Royalcam nest from the view of the cam is South Plateau. This seasons nest is in a little from Karere's old nest and almost where the cam setup was that season. This chicks dad, GLY famously fed Karere during the post guard stage. Feeding of a neighbours chick in post guard is a very fare occurrence

10:13 am Little one pooped on Dad :rotf:
it looks as if dad could tell from the chick's movements that he was readying for a PS. As the chick was starting to aim in his direction, dad was barking 'don't you dare! don't even think about it! Watch the little one giggling after.

18:02 LGK leaves the chick. There was no feeding Chick was not begging! They think it can be a girl . She is very independent :D

Royal Albatross - Taiaroa Head:

6th March 2021:

Strange things happen at an Albie nest at night:

6:45: An Albie walks in - this is not a parent.

Image

6:47: Another Albie joins - seems to 'belong' to the other.

Image

They preen each other.

Image

At 6:56 they walk away.

Apart from a couple of nips they did not bother the chick - who did not like being touched and who was wide awake during their stay.

March 9th

Good Morning!

Sharyn Broni (Ranger, DOC) Mod • 8 hours ago •

Apologies for the power outage today, there was necessary electrical work needing done in the area.
The DNA analysis from the blood vessels that remain in the egg shell post hatching have been returned to us from the lab at the University of Otago.

Only one of the 33 chicks did not receive a result as the egg shell was too damaged to retrieve enough material. This season there are 17 female chicks and 15 male chicks. We will be able to determine the unknown chicks sex in May once the weight and temperament is more accurately known to us.

Today the Royal cam chick is 44 days old, a female and has two female chick neighbours, the one next door and the one down the bank.

The Royalcam chick was weighed this morning although we did not see it on the live stream and came in at 3.5kg. This is a healthy weight for a female chick of this age. It is important for our conservation efforts of the Northern Royal Albatross at Taiaroa Head that any chicks low in weight are supplementary fed. Salmon is donated to us by New Zealand King Salmon Ltd.

It has been busy at the Royalcam nest area over the last few days but there is much less wind today.
