Info by Sharyn Broni, DOC Ranger!
Evening weighs for many of the chicks have been discontinued as, like at this nest they are over 500g. In fact, yesterday's weigh in at this nest was 630g, more than double the hatch weight.
And this!
Some first time breeders have needed a helping hand with feeding their chicks. These chicks get swapped to an experienced nest who gave already fed their chick. The bigger, already fed chick knows how to get an adult it feed it and will persist on begging for food. Meanwhile the experienced breeder feeds the brand new chick.Enjoy this photo of a now happy chick that has been fed at an experienced nest and whose parents have been taught how to feed.

Sharyn Broni: No, actually we just made a new system due to the business of the season. Any that are over 500g in the morning will not need an evening weigh. The morning weighs may stop before 2 weeks are up is the chick is over 1kg by that time.

Sharyn Broni, DOC Ranger:The sprinklers are on today. Long hours of sunshine with light winds are hard on large birds that have evolved adaptations for the southern oceans.

Each nest has an individual valve and riser system so that each nest can be catered for with as least water wastage as possible.

We have a few nests that are more sheltered than this one so it can take some time to get around all of the nests. The pump must be turned on and the end valves opened so that water in the pipes can run out. The black pipes really heat up the water in this weather and we need to spray the birds with cold water. Once the water is running cold the end valves are turned off and best valves opened, usually starting from the bottom of the hill.

First time breeders may be a bit nervous of this water coming up from the ground at first so they need close monitoring. It can be better not to spray if it means they would get off the best to get away from this unusual situation. The do get used to it however and it really does help.
