Good Morning sova, it is relatively normal, but it is a long time (for me). The parents fly up to 10,000 km to find food. So of course it takes time for them to come back.
In an emergency, the chick is fed by the rangers.

A feature of albatross feeding is the cross bill style as opposed to the face to face style of many other species. As the chicks grow the lumps the parents feed become larger. A lot of liquid passes and this is hard to spot. The time between feeds can vary but a week is not uncommon.

At over 60 years of age, “Grandma” a Northern Royal Albatross, is the oldest banded bird in the world – and incredibly, she is still breeding.

A gentle sociable bird, Grandma was one of the first albatross to call at Taiaroa Head, near Dunedin, New Zealand the only mainland-breeding colony in the world. Join Grandma six decades on and share in the intimacy of courtship, engagement and the life-long bonding of this rare and beautiful bird.

After 60 years of coming back to the same spot to breed, Grandma never returned. Grandma’s annual flight captured here by Wild South’s cameras, was her last.

YRK was back to feed her chick at 10.20am today. Good timing as it is a wet day here. The warm food in the chicks tummy will keep her warm and there will be tiny feathers underneath the down now acting as an addtional insulating layer. These birds are well adapted to cold weather.

Today is day 60, so not so little any more. Two thirds of the colonies chicks are older. Did you you know that the chicks become heavier than their parents from around 4 months of age? This is to insure they get through the cold winter and grow their huge wings and are feathered up for fledging in September.

Once the chicks have been in post guard stage for a few weeks the parents are having to travel further away for longer periods. They need to find enough food to keep themselves alive and the chick growing. It will take both parents all their time to achieve this and then they will not have the body condition to raise a chick next year. This is why the larger albatross species are biennial breeders, raising a chick every two years.

This graphic shows research of were 3 parents went for food between February and May 2012. Much activity not too far from the coast followed by longer trips nearly 1000km from the headland.

Migration and foraging trips
Renowned ocean wanderers, royal albatross travel vast distances from their breeding grounds to feed – as much as 190,000 km a year. Royal albatross range throughout the Southern Ocean and are most commonly seen in New Zealand coastal waters during winter.

Birds have been banded on Campbell Island since the early 1940s. Returned bands show young birds and nonbreeders migrate to southern South American waters and back to New Zealand.

In other work, satellite transmitter packages developed by French, British and Australian researchers were used to track the birds’ flight paths. Signals were monitored by satellite and the information used to learn more about the birds while at sea. One bird travelled 13,000 kilometres during a two-week foraging trip.
