Many thanks to all of you!

It is quite a shock that the cause of death is the H5N1 avian influenza virus, isn’t it?
This news sounds alarming.
I hope the virus has not affected many other birds in the meantime.
It is also worrisome that mammals, including humans can get the disease.

Hopefully Gunnar was not infected.

And let’s hope Eve and Eerik will fully recover.

Take care!

to me the eaglet looked older than last year. :puzzled:
that would be 2 CY. they are still very dark and spotty. this was very blond already, only the beak was still very dark. this was certainly older than that, at least 3 CY or 4 CY.

the ringed eagle was probably at least 5 CY. that was an Estonian female. her rings were barely big enough for her.
i made some pictures. the rings were very muddy and the colours barely discernable. anyway i think that the country ring is Estonian blue over white. besides the country ring she had the individual black number ring. there's no chance to see any number or letters because the ring was so dirty.

in Latvia they have been giving only one ring with both country colours and the individual code at least since 2015.
Triin, what is the practise in Estonia? are the eaglets still given two rings?

I will correct it as soon as the original is available.

I used your link and my translation for a video on YT. Many have been waiting impatiently for the result. I hope its OK? Video is, as always, with details of the sources including a link to the original.
Yes, of course it's ok. I have a similar problem - easier to write in Estonian and too impatient to wait until we have the article translated into English. Even with the articles that I myself have to translate :D.

Thank you to all those involved in collecting the chicks, analysing what caused them to die and informing us here on the forum. Terrible news that this strain of bird flu most likely has infected the parents - i hope they recover. I also hope the humans who have had contact with these birds are all safe and well.

When Eve and Eerik were seen nearby last time? It is very suspicious that stranger eagles fly in and the parents didn't return.

So they abandoned the nest after the dead chicks were taken away and did not return?

We use two rings - blue-white on right leg and black on left. The rings have different codes (country ring starts with "M" and at the moment year-ring with "E"). There is no plan to change that as very often only one ring can be read.

Before they had the first egg, a lot of strangers visited the nest. Eve and Eerik didn't really chase them away back then.

Yes, Eve was in the nest that morning, she lifted the dead EE1 and ate some fish. They haven't been seen after the dead chicks were taken away.

Edit. there is a video showing her visit.

After that they flew around and called, but last few days they are not even heard around the nest.

18.21 an eagle landed on a branch - and flew away a few moments later. Another spotty juvenile?
