Happy New Year sea & seal lovers!

unfortunately the weather isn't favourable to us today, on the first day of the year and the first day of the new Seal Season 2011, and so we cannot see the sea nor the seals. :faint:

this is the current weather data half an hour ago:

and this is the forecast:

the wind doesn't seem to be as strong as was forecast for today but if those snowflakes and droplets are right then i'm afraid that we shan't see much of the camera in the following days.... :slap:

The temperatures are not so very low, as to freeze the sea.
Someone told me that it needs sustained temperature of -8C for sea-water to freeze.

:hi: Hi, Fleur. Lovely morning, & the water looks mostly not frozen, just some ice chunks floating by.

Edit, 9:15-- Seals are popping up their heads!

The wind has blown the snow over most of the rocks. I wonder how much the beach has grown due to ice.

(as it is new years we went out birding and I got to see swans -- probably Tundra Swans - in person)

Enjoy your breakfast, Fleur!

@Alice, your birding expedition sounds fun. Wonderful that you saw the swans!

Pretty sunrise colors today.

And now I have seen peeking seals

(There were lots of people in the goose refuge -- it seems birding is a popular thing to do on New Year's day)

Seals poke up heads again. (I think we got almost the same shot, Alice.)

New Year's Day birding as a tradition sounds like a nice way to spend the day.

Dawn light on snow.

The smooth, reflective areas on the sea must be places where the water is slushy & almost frozen. the seals are easily able to poke up their heads through it.

Some of the colours and light last just a moment and then they are gone.

It really is lovely, though. The snow is undisturbed & covers all logs but the top edge of the long one in center view. I wonder if the seals have been coming up on the beach in the past couple of days while the cam was off.

Sea spray makes more ice. Far shore is lighted up.

Image

The ice chunks floating past remind me of the swans that swam slowly by in summer & autumn.

Edit, 9:55-- I hear seals singing.

Those ice chunks definitely made me think of the swans I saw earlier today -- they were in sunlight but against a grey sky.

I wonder if perhaps the seals spend more time on floating ice than on the shore -- when there is ice.
