OrniTrack information

At 21:53 Karl II was flying towards the nest at a speed of 45 km/h.
At 21:58 he was home.
At 22:38 (last known data) he was still on the nest. :D

So most probably the chicks have had another meal, and perhaps Karl II will stay with his storklets tonight. :2thumbsup:

Today, Karl II flew 94.2 km
He was at 2 different feeding sites today:
- 1 time he was at (the marshy banks) of that wider (well-known) watercourse, about 16.5 km from the nest
- all other "feeding-excursions" were to the same (also well-known) brook, about 7 km from the nest.

Sleep well, everyone!
Thanks for all wonderful contributions!

Some of you raised concerns about food shortage. Perhaps you can help me for better understanding :help: :
There was a lot of rain in spring time, it is without rain for not longer than 2-3 weeks now (do not remember exactly). Do you know what kind of food source they use? Little brooks or small ponds? I think it is both but the less water remains in small ponds the more fishes are concentrated in a smaller volume and should be easier to catch. I assume this is the current situation; I cannot imagine that brooks and ponds already dried out completely. Good night!

Hello @aperitif

In terms of short-term heat, I am less worried about drying out a pond, lake, or stream. The point is that if the drought persists, wetlands suffer. I don't know how long it takes to dry out a wet meadow.
The extreme heat puts a lot of stress on the chicks. They might not evolve so quickly. You may have noticed that the heat has a great effect on the daily feedings. Today the chicks got almost nothing to eat for 10 hours during the heat, apart from a few bites. Of course, the parents try to compensate for this by feeding them well in the morning and evening. But how long does it go on if it didn't rain at all?

10:54 feeding time! I don't see anything out of sheer fluff! But it was fish that Karl II brought.

Hello everyone

Many thanks, Swenja :2thumbsup: :hi:

OrniTrack MORNING information

Karl II was on the nest all night.

Around 06:00 he flew away.
We see him flying at a speed of 34 - 36 km/h to a feeding site in a forest.
(I have only seen him once before at that place, during one of his 'excursions'.)
Between 06:20 and 08:00 he is searching for food at a somewhat wider watercourse in that forest, about 8 km from the nest.
At 08:02 he returns to the nest. He flies at a speed of 48 - 57 km/h.
At 08:12 he comes home.

At 09:25 he flies to a brooklet about 1.3 km from the nest.
There we see him until 10:37 (last morning data), fishing.
At 10:57 he is home. (camera observation)

The chicks are home alone.

#1 (?) defecates in the nest bowl. Is it too hot to go to the nest edge and lift his/her body properly? It was a tiny PS

It’s very hot. The chicks breathe noticeably and fast.
AccuWeather says that it’s currently 31C in Karula. Real feel 32C (in the shade).

We haven’t seen Kaia today yet, have we?

I'm afraid the connection doesn't like the heat either.

19:15 The camera is still offline.
I hope everything is fine with our chicks.

I’ll make the “OrniTrack information”, but probably later than usual. We have visitors tonight.

The camera transmission is still interrupted. But I will summarize what we know today.

Summary
Karl II was in the nest overnight.
01:03 Camera off
Track data:
06:00 Karl II away from the nest
08:12 Karl II is back in the nest
09:25 Karl II away

09:57 Camera on
10:54 feeding Karl II
10:56-13:00 Karl II gave the chicks water, wet grass and shade.
13:00 Karl II away
The shadow from the trees came back into the nest.
14:39 Camera off

1 feeding in the morning could be observed. Based on the track data, we can assume that there was 1 more feeding in the morning.

Thank you very much for the Orni tracker data @Anne7 :2thumbsup:
I hope the camera broadcast will work again soon.

Good night!
