I think it's feathers moulting. Maybe he's wet on his head too?
In the past few weeks, Karl II had thin spots above the eyes that you could sometimes see.

A feather is very badly worn.



How long does it take for the black feathers to grow back?
Black storks have a long flight to the south ahead of them. I have read that black storks are not affected in flight when they change feathers.
They change all feathers over a very long period of time and in stages.

Nice to see Kaia and Karl together, seemingly in confidence on the nest, functioning as a 'beauty salon' for them during long time now . Kaia may have spent a lot of time in such premises as her plumage looks more ordered and cleaner white.
