Hello @ Liz01 :hi:

It is not certain what will happen to the eggs when you consider that these eggs are probably the first eggs of the young female. Can the eggs be unfertilized?

So far, there have been more than 2 days between egg laying. Karl II started breeding immediately when the first egg was laid.

So it remains very exciting.

In the case of 2nd clutch, late arrivals and new territory, breeding in Central Europe can still be expected until the end of May and beginning of June

It is also described that only one or two chicks fled at a late start of breeding. How many eggs a clutch has in late breeders is not documented. They think it's a normal clutch.. four eggs.
Thank you for the information, Liz. :hi:

Do the authors consider Estonia to be in Central Europe, according to the recommendation by the "Ständiger Ausschuss für geographische Namen" in Germany?
(There are numerous other definitions and viewpoints. Some (most?) say that Estonia is in Northern Europe.)

The climate is different, isn't it? Or do you think this makes no difference?
Possibly the breeding season is shorter in Estonia.

On May 6th, so even before there were any eggs in this nest, Urmas wrote:
"... Despite mating trials, it is unlikely that this year's breeding will still be successful. Even if eggs are laid and chicks hatch, their departure time is too late. The best you can hope for now is that the young female feels well and would like to come back next year. ..."

I have written this before, sorry to repeat it.

Meanwhile there are 2 eggs, and they will not hatch before mid-June.
The first egg was laid on May 14th, the second one came 4 days later, on May 18th.
That is a month later than usual
We can only wait and see what happens.

Good evening,

many thanks to all for todays documentation and informations. :2thumbsup:

Liz, Anne, thanks! Also if Estonia belongs more to northern than Central Europe ... exceptions to breeding rules can always occur.
We'll just have to wait and see. Whatever else ...?

22:06 Kaia is breeding.

Good Morning @Summi :hi:

Was Kaia in the nest all night and was she alone?
Karl II was not to be seen.
04:23 It looks like Kaia was alone in the nest overnight. We see two eggs.

09:46 Karl II is home. He sneaked up on Kaia.
Kaia was very scared and panicked when Karl II came.
She flew out of the nest.

Then she came back into the nest.

10:50 this branch on the edge of the nest must be special. Karl II had placed him there specially.
Now he has to climb over it.

And then he looks to right interested for a while.

I think Kaia is used to be alone and still has to learn that somebody is coming near her. She really is inexperienced.

What is the shadow in front of Karl II?
Did Kaia shrink when she was startled?
I hope not!

15:17 Karl II has a hard time keeping his eyes open.
It is nice weather and it is pleasantly calm in the forest.

Better get up and stretch your legs, to the toilet and make some order with the nest.
