Re: Black Stork Nest in Karula, 2021

Post by Tatiana60 »

09: 58 the rain has become a little quieter and the average one has resumed training, he walks around the nest with his wings open, climbs far to the right, jumps... the rest of the inhabitants of the nest do not know where to go from it... The middle one drove the older one away... he walks and jumps... T nervously touches the branches in the nest... I was also worried... P's anxiety is growing, he came across a walking T and arranged proceedings with him - they made a growl and knocked with their beaks, then P switched to twigs...
All three chicks walk around the nest and take turns flapping their wings, driving the brothers to the corners... nerves, hormones, and once again the excitement of empty stomachs...

10: 08: 21 Karl II suddenly appeared on the right . But what was it, 10: 08: 21 Karl II suddenly appeared on the right . He held the older chick a little with his right foot to enter the center of the nest, entered, opened his beak and somehow immediately flew away... there were no fish in sight at the bottom of the nest... he turned around and flew away... the children are at a loss...
Image

10.08.24 the father holds the elder so that he can enter the nest.
Image

10:08:36
Image

10:08:42 he flew away
The father's beak opened, the children stuck their beaks into his beak, flapped their wings high. Of course, it was clear from the movement of the neck and the sound that he had brought something. Once, a small fish to flash ... in any case, it was not enough. The children looked around for a long time and looked for him.

... father brought food in such a rain...he arrived so wet... let's say thank you to him. And it's time to stimulate the chicks to fly out... rain gets in the way...

10:15... the elder actively knocks with his beak, he looks like a rattle... he likes to talk... The others are silent...
10: 40 the rain does not subside.
10:52 Ignoring the rain, 716T gets rid of the last fluff..
I don't see that the chicks have found and used the sebaceous gland, but apparently the young growing feathers still have their own protection, and the sebaceous gland will work later and attract the attention of the chicks. And while they are cleaning their feathers, they have learned to sort them out and iron them with their beak like an iron...

11: 00 the chicks are looking in different directions and waiting for the rain to stop... I'm waiting too...

We will look for the good in everything - the rain will clean the transmitters and the camera, the letter T on the baby's leg, the rain also always stimulates cleaning from the last fluff, parents will rest, children will lose a little weight, they will be ready for an easier flight. They still need to return to the nest at such a height!

So this rain is a respite before new achievements.

11:11:22 everyone is working... so what if it's raining... under a pine tree, it's not so scary (A good place for a nest).

it is still raining, but there is no wind and the nest is almost dry, the right branch is not even wet.

11: 27 the middle one did a warm-up-jumped up, waved his wings... now he walks with his wings outstretched, he is such an important gentleman... he argues with the younger one and even grabbed his leg... The older one looks at it from the left corner.

11: 31 well, that's it... now the 716P is gently touching the 716T... and he went to the branch... how much energy he has.. He flaps his wings, even standing on a branch.

The 716U is inspired - it flaps its wings while standing on the back edge of the nest. The 716P has moved to the right, the 716T is standing by the camera.

The huge wings of our big 716U will sweep everyone away if she wants to, but she's a good girl, I believe in it....

Sometimes 716P slips on a branch, but always keeps its balance and returns. He doesn't give up.

11: 37: 42 the younger one pulls the middle one by the tail from the branch, or maybe he doesn't let the camera break?
Image

11:39
Image

11: 41 ... 716P periodically tries to contact us through the camera...God didn't give him fingers like monkeys, but he has a beak...and he learns to work with it...

12: 26: 37 the mood of the 716P is lyrical - he stroked the younger one and decided to stroke the older one.
Image

12: 26: 59 the older chick evaded the caresses of 716P, he even growled... then 716P strokes junior again... Such a changeable mood in the average....

12:31:53 where are you, restless 716P, it's even boring without you
Image

12:35:43 the younger one started training - the middle one decided not to stop
Image

12:36:38 finishing the training, the younger one put things in order in the nest (removed the small twigs from the gym) and climbed onto a thick branch on the right..... he decided to also repair the camera after 716...
12:38:57 junior on the branch . He tries so hard to seem like an adult, but the yellow corners of his mouth give him away.

12.52.10 the father has not yet left, and the children have already eaten everything
Image

12: 52:16 Charles II passed through the entire nest and flew to the right.

Looking at Karl II, I thought that he was luring them out of the nest, he is so wet, he is tired... And how responsible he is!
The chicks would have learned to fly sooner...

12:57:32 the younger one tries to stop the middle one, he turned around, and the younger one strokes his neck, showing his kind attitude.

13:46 the rain does not stop... but the nest is quite dry.

14: 15 the younger one is sitting and sleeping... just like a baby... does he remember his childhood? The older one stands in front of him and periodically cleans the younger one's head and neck... since it was done by parents to their chicks... The baby does not want to get up, but cleans the older one where he gets it... the younger one is sitting... he doesn't want to grow up so much....

When will you fly?

:hi: Heloise, please translation/correction - thanx in advance:

Continuous flight drills, but in the nest
The female bird Kaia and the male bird Karl II with three stork chicks are restless in the nest: they walk around, everyone trains their wings diligently, but the courage to fly out of the nest is lacking…
Our last week's guess that someone was flying out of the nest turned out to be wrong. Over the years, stork chicks have flown their first flight at the age of 65 days. Today the company/correction: storklets (thanx Heloise) will be two months and a week old.
The feeding table of young birds is nicely covered by old birds. Yesterday, the male bird fed the storks four times and the female bird twice (we hope that some feeding was not missed).

Yes, Solo, we see that they have grown up and the time is very good at the beginning of August, so that parents fly away and gain strength before migration... We haven't seen Kaia today... we can part with she at any moment... it's time for her to leave, too... It would be nice if she came to say goodbye (yesterday she was 2 times (the last time for yesterday - at 18: 18...) And the chicks don't fly yet...

Hello everyone!

Today, the two oldest storklets (U and P) are 66 days old.
The youngest one (T) is 64 days old.

These storklets are not late yet to make their maiden flight.
On average, this happens around the age of 65 to 70 days.
(A few days earlier or a few days later has also been observed in the past. On this nest between 63 and 76 days!)

These storklets hatched about 7-10 days later than the storklets on this nest in previous years. Maybe that's why they may seem late.

After fledging, these chicks will still need Karl II, preferably until they are at least 80 (and better yet 90) days old.
They are still too young to be independent and migrate successfully.

But yes, it could be that Kaia will leave for the south soon.
Every time we do see her on the nest now may have been the last time...
We will see.

I don't think Karl II is in a hurry to leave yet.
Leaving Estonia sometime in the second half of August would be perfectly normal for him.

I don't think Karl II will 'lure his storklets out of the nest' now to encourage them to fly. Nor do I think he will deliberately limit the food.
Usually the parents - and in this stage the father - bring as much food as they can catch. I think they are patiently waiting for the storklets to decide for themselves that it is time to fly, that they are ready for it.
The only thing that could compromise things would be a shortage of food in the area (within a radius of let's say 25 km around the nest). Food scarcity and hunger could at some point force the young to leave the nest prematurely and look for food themselves. But that would not be good! How or where would they be able to find food, when even experienced adults fail to do so?

Tatiana, many thanks! Great reporting and wonderful pictures + video! :hi: :2thumbsup:

It was a nice feeding at 12:52. (But obviously not yet enough food for today...)
I made some extra pics.

In my opinion, the translation is perfectly understandable. Thank you!
(Maybe... I would use the word group (or better storklets) instead of company.)

It is rainy... maybe windy and rainy weather is the reason why stork boys don't dare to fly yet...

We'll see! 8-)

16: 28 the rain continues, apparently, the density of the green crown of the spruce is not able to hold so much water and the plumage of the chicks in the nest began to get wet. Their necks and the top of their tailcoats-their backs are wet, but their tummies and breasts are still fluffy.

And in the forest, small birds sang, the blue sky shone through from behind the trees, it looks like it's a mushroom rain...

17: 46 the sun is no longer there, the rest is still unchanged. Rain, wet chicks, lack of food.
