August 30
Hello everyone
- Benjamin (the youngest/fourth chick) on July 12 perished 25 day old (unknown reason)
- Tasane/peaceful (No3 - 7183) fledged on Aug 24 at 13:57:28 and on Aug 26 was killed by a raccoon dog about 30 metres from the nest
- Malbe/sedate (No2 - 7182) fledged on Aug 22 at 17:35:35 and on Aug 23 was killed by predator a bit more as 100m of nest
- Julge/brave (No1 - 7181) fledged on Aug 23 at 09:14:31 and on Aug 28 at 09:41:07 Julge definitely flew away
- on August 06 female Janika was last seen on the nest (feeding at 16.14 )
- on August 25 male Jan was last seen on the nest (feeding at 12.38)
Julge/brave (No1 - 7181) is today 77 day old

today morning data session (whole previous day): https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 74#p827874
today evening data session: Transmission from Julge did not happen, most probably no GSM network in that place.

(Unfortunately on the day all the posts disappeared).
During (old) field observations (the book), there was no way to tell who is who.
Where are the storklets born, how old are they, are they already on their way south or still near the nest? Who are the parents? Is that adult BS a stranger, the father or the mother?
Without rings or transmitters it’s impossible (or hard) to say.
I think there are just too few controlled observations of tagged BS juveniles and their parents, so far. I mean about the period between their first flight and the moment they start their migration.
I read conflicting information. So I don't know what to think in this stage.
The answer may be more nuanced.
From the camera observations this year on Karl II's nest, combined with the tracker data, one can say with fairly high certainty that he did not make any trips with his storklets.
So what do they mean by ‘leadership time’?
Karl II dropped the food on the nestfloor and was immediately off again, alone, 5, 10 or 20 km from the nest, looking for more fish to bring.
So I am inclined to believe that the initial 'skill to fish’ is innate, and is refined little by little by experience.
I think you are right about a lot of things. Especially since it is confirmed again and again that storks cannot be identified without rings / transmitters. I don't know how Carsten Rohde did it!
leadership time has also been observed in recent field observations at Carsten Rohde. He was given the task of determining how far the juvenile fly after they leave the nest and how endangered they are by wind turbines and whether the legally prescribed distance to the nests is sufficient. leadership would mean that the juveniles are "led" by their parents. I have no idea if there is a better word. "Führungszeit"in German.
But the good thing is that there are now more and more juveniles with transmitters that we can follow. Maybe that brings clarity to the matter?
BTW:Carsten Rohde writes about the identification of adult storks: Pay attention to the distinctive individual moulting gaps in the hand and arm wings.
I'm afraid the translation of the wing parts is incorrect?

Only predator I observed there directly was... bear. Perhaps 200m of remnants of 7182. That happened on my way back to car and in almost darkness. There can't be mistake. Bear was running quickly if noticed who is close to him...

It is like a fairy tale, the further, the more terrible
I am not sure if a bear is able to climb on 8 meters but it can get a victim on the ground. I think Tooni was a wise guy, he wouldn't have moved from here just without any serious reason, but he couldn't leave a message "Beware of bears and racoon dogs".

bears do not feed on meat food
I see no reason to attack the storks

Hello!
More from an earlier topic:
When I watched Pikne´s life in Karula's nest, I saw that s/he left the nest infrequently and for a short time. As we know, s/he did not go fishing with Karl II. Pikne was in the nest until the last minute and headed straight south. Consequently, s/he must learn to fish only on his journey south...
