Suggest Names for Young Black Storks in Karula 2021

Post by juta »

Please, suggest names for our now ringed storklets.

I think we should choose names starting with P for 716 P, with T for 716 T, with U for 716 U

We have two options.

One to choose from the names list with the possibility to change them later for similar other gender names:
https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naisenimede_loend (female)
https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehenimede_loend (male)
Names in red are those I have never heard! :D

Another option is to find gender-free names. Here are some names from previous years which were not used:

Pikne(lightning), Piibar( a person who plays mus.instrument), Põud(drought)
Tuul(wind), Torm(storm), Tore(splended, nice)
Udu (fog), Ustav(loyal), Uljas(daring), Uhke(proud)

These are some thoughts. As it is not voting yet any other suggestions and thoughts are welcome!

I like the idea to give them geographical names from the area of Karula NP and found some names:

U - Ujuste (brook), Urvaste (village)

P - Punsa (brook and village), Pedeli (river), Peetri (river), Peebu (village)

T - Tollari (lake), Taheva (village)

What is your opinion?

2. Tuul (male, means wind) / Tuuli( female)
3. Uku (male)/ Ulla (female)

Hello!

I would suggest...
... since we don't know the sex of the storks, maybe there could be a

T- Tuul (means: wind),
P- Pikne (means: thunder 8-) )
U- Udu (means: fog)

Edit:
Toomas (male) / Tuuli (female)
Peeter (male) / Piret female)
Uku (male) / Ulvi (female)
Owlie

I added gender-free names which were not used in previous years. There are also names that Heloise suggested.

Hello

I like these beautiful names very much and will support this suggestion!

(It is also easier to choose gender-neutral names, so that we won't have to switch to ‘the other name’ after 6 months or so.)

I think these names are very beautiful.

Are there gender-free names in some languages? And so many names? 8-) Cool!
edit: I don't know one gender-free name in my language.

I'm glad, Swenja and sova and Anne7 and Owlie
In fact, only one of these names is used as a first name, at least one man in Estonia: Pikne.
Tuul - used as Tuuli (female)
Udu... not used as a first name, may be Uudo or Udo (male).

It could be also
Tormi (torm means: storm), I know one person (man)...

Hello!
I like Hellems idea.
Here another, alternate version of name finding, leaned on popular names for these (humans) shy forest dwellers.

- Osavalt kalur = skillfully Fisher
- Metsa pärl = Forest gem
- Toonela lind

Hopefully I am correct with the translation into Estonian language. If not, I am happy about correction

Hello, Biker!
I have some comments (please don't be offended!)
These name combinations look like Native American names to me right away! "Brave Eagle" etc...

Osav Kalur
Metsa Pärl or Metsapärl
Toonela lind
:

"Toonela lind" is a slightly archaic and poetic name for "must või valge toonekurg" (black or white stork),
the abbreviation: toone(la)+kurg (stork)

"Toonela lind"=toonekurg=black (or white) stork

The "bird of the Toonela" (Toonela is the "Country of Death", the "Other Side") has always been said about them... but it's a generalization... it was believed that they were associated with death.

"The Estonian name for a stork (toonekurg) refers to a "toonela" or country of death. The bird of Toonela was actually a black stork, which was known in Estonian areas before its white genus. The appearance of the dark-clothed black stork, which is nesting deep in the woods, was seen in some places ahead of death."

:book:

I hope you understand what I mean. I'm sorry and I hope you don't mind!

P.S. We had initials
T, P, U :puzzled:
or does it not matter?

@Heloise
About a nice answer no one can be offended, I certainly not. :)

Who better to explain 'Toonela lind' than an Estonian.
(I saw the movie)

That roule of Toonela lind as a guiding /acompaniment to the other side has an especial, very positive meaning, for me.
