I expect JJ8 is migrating tomorrow afternoon - wheather forcast is good - until monday morning. There will be more rain and worsening conditions...Vera arrived with full crop, Louis delivered 2nd fish, Vera took it immediately & left to her safer favourite eating place I guess.

https://community.rspb.org.uk/placestov ... nt-4292=69Geemeff: Sunny intervals and a northerly wind forecast for tomorrow, heavy rain on Monday, means tomorrow should be a good day for travelling, so here's another 'just in case' potential final look at JJ8 video as she departs the nest, fishtail stuck to her foot, at 18.37 tonight. Goodnight all..

Vera (JJ8) departs at 06.40.19 taking the remains of the two day old flatfish with her. She was heard calling off camera from 06.18.30 and arrived still calling at 06.19.41, had a quick look around then grabbed the two day old flatfish (delivered at 12.28.57 on Friday 4th) and started eating with enthusiasm. Is this her final visit? Vera will head south when she's ready, however, today just feels right for her last visit - she didn't really call for food in her usual vociferous way, just picked up the old flatfish and dived in for a good munch before leaving with the rest of it.
Is she grabbing a quick bite before heading south? Dare we ask, yet again - is this the last time? And the answer still is... time will tell! But at 97 days old today (6th September), with a full crop after lots of fish yesterday and the previous day, and a northerly wind today, Africa is beckoning, and the siren song is getting louder.

heartbreaking news about KC5 Dwynwen
https://www.facebook.com/brenigospreypr ... 3246216430
We were recently made aware of the discovery of a dead osprey at the RWE Clocaenog wind farm which was confirmed to be KC5. We were informed by the operator of the windfarm who also advised that the bird had died of injuries consistent with a strike from a blade of a wind turbine and that it had been found dead on the 6th August. Our last sighting of the bird on the nest at Llyn Brenig was at 10.55am that same morning. This was 12 days before any filming had started at Llyn Brenig. This is a very sad development for all involved and interested in the Brenig Osprey Project.
https://www.northwaleswildlifetrust.org ... lyn-brenig
Update 09/10/20
It has been generally accepted that the Llyn Brenig ospreys have been on their southward migration since the last sightings in North Wales at the end of August. However, in late September, we heard the truly distressing news that the body of this year’s youngster (KC5) had been found adjacent to a wind turbine, some 4.8 km south-east of the nest, on 6 August. This is clearly a very sad outcome for all concerned, and we will be working with RWE Renewables UK and other stakeholders to assess and implement opportunities to reduce the risks of any future, similar occurrence.
We are continuing to work with everyone concerned to evaluate the events leading up to that date, and are also left with a perplexing mystery as to the identity of the third bird seen around Llyn Brenig in the days and weeks that followed. We are working on this as well and, as and when possible, will post a further update.

WTGeorge :
LATEST NEWS AS OF SUNDAY LUNCHTIME
An unknown female appeared at the nest on Sunday morning! Watch from 6.28.
She was only on camera for about two seconds, but finally some action for Louis who has been with us since last Sunday.
If this bird sticks around and Aila arrives there may be a tussle for the nest.
But will she re-appear on Sunday afternoon? Keep watching.

A lot of you are messaging us at the moment and asking questions about Blue 24.
She has been breeding at Llyn Brenig (around 40 miles away) for the last three years (2018 - 2020), but she has not been sighted this year and neither has her mate, Blue HR7, as far as we know.
The chances of a both individuals of an osprey pair not returning the following year is around 100:1 - so this is a possibility.
However, when a complete pair fails to show up, this also opens the (slight) possibility that they could have moved nests or are prospecting elsewhere.
We know that pairs do sometimes stay together even when not breeding, but we have to stress.... we simply don't know what has happened.
Llyn Brenig is managed by Dŵr Cymru. If she ever is spotted on the Dyfi nest, we will, of course, let you know.

Brenig Osprey Project partners woke up this morning to the worst possible news. Last night, at 21.42, someone took a chainsaw to the osprey nest and felled it. This is a fast-moving situation and we’ll issue more news of the birds when we can – please, please be kind to Dwr Cymru/NWWT staff this weekend as we work out how to respond to this horrific act of vandalism.

Hello everyone / P’nawn da, pawb
From all of us at Welsh Water and North Wales Wildlife Trust, thank you so much for your support today. It’s been a long morning! Some thoughts and news to share:
2. This morning, Welsh Water staff have cleared one of the nearby, ‘closed’ platforms – which our nesting pair had already been scouting out. Our hope is that they will relocate to it within days – the female may well even be ready to lay, and we think we’ve given her a good option. Until we know whether they’ll use it, our protection measures will be mostly reactive and there may be limitations on what can be delivered at the new platform. Again, please bear with us whilst we get things in place – we’ll update everyone as soon as we possibly can.

The picture is a bit blurry but you can clearly see two proud parents with an egg in the centre of the nest. Laid sometime last night we think. Nick, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water
EDIT - Review of the footage shows the egg was there at 16:15 on 29th April

Hi seira
I posted this in the Glaslyn thread, earlier. We may want to keep them together.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,

WTGeorge :
The May holiday weekend is now behind us and the nest is still empty, except for one fleeting visit from Louis.
So we proceed on the basis that there will be no osprey family livestream show in 2021 at Loch Arkaig.
Happily though, ospreys are breeding at another nest nearby and there have been signs of activity at a further two locations in the wider area. Two golden eagle pairs and one sea eagle pair are also likely breeding. So while the camera view may be largely empty, the skies above Loch Arkaig Pine Forest remain busy. If we are sad it should only be for ourselves, as the birds are getting on with things out of our view.
The camera livestream will remain open for the duration of the season and if we are lucky it might become an outpost of family life in late summer. We will aim to keep you informed of developments via this page. As usual, Lewis Pate will be planning to ring chicks in any occupied osprey nests in the district. Louis' new nest on Woodland Trust ground will be one of those, as well as the nests at the far West end of the Loch and at Bunarkaig. So we hope to have some photographs to share come ringing time in July.
Many thanks to those of you who have already kindly donated to support our work at Loch Arkaig, or more widely. We have not been pro-active in asking for support this year so far, but I would ask those of you who are able, to support us now if you can.
Our work at Loch Arkaig PIne Forest will restore a magnificent ancient Caledonian pine wood to its natural state and secure the habitat for ospreys and many other wild creatures for years ahead. We really appreciate your help making this possible. We realise times are uncertain for many, but if you are able to contribute we would be very grateful.
All this livestream has ever been able to deliver is a narrow slice of wild woodland life. Much that goes on off screen remains a mystery and we simply won't know what will happen until it happens.
So will Louis come back to use the camera nest next year? He might, but we don't know. We will have to wait and see.
What has happened to Aila? She may have died on her southern migration last year. She may have been taken by some predator in Africa. She may have died trying to get back to Loch Arkaig this Spring. Or she may have got blown off course but settled somewhere else to make the best of the season, and might return next year.
We don't know.
And that is OK. Because there are hundreds of other Ailas and Louis out there in an ever expanding population of British ospreys. There will always be a year when a particular individual doesn't come back. But there will hopefully never be a year when none come back.
And if just now and then, a couple of them could park themselves in front of our camera - that would be dandy.
