2021.04.29 - Allan & Chris Burrows took a trip to Perlubie to see if they could see Solly. They were in luck and found her just settling into roost at Eba Anchorage. She was certainly not lonely as while they sat and watched her she had 2 Lincoln Parrots, 5 Mulga Parrots and a Butcher Bird all in the same tree. Thanks for sharing Chris.

We have been receiving reports of an Osprey hunting along the North Shore near Port Lincoln in recent weeks. Now thanks to these fabulous photos from local photographer Peg McAvaney we know it is Calypso.
Calypso hatched on the 18th September 2019 and was the first Osprey Banded in South Australia for many years. She has a blue band on her left leg and a silver band on the right leg. Unlike little sister Solly, Calypso has regularly been seen within about 10 kilometres of Port Lincoln since she left the nest.
Its fabulous to see she is still doing well.

Well hello Solly!!
We have spent the past two days "up the coast" (West Coast of South Australia) checking Osprey Nests and looking to see first hand the area that Solly has been calling home in recent months.
To recap her story so far.... Solly was the first hatched chick from the Port Lincoln Barge hatching on 20th September 2020. Two other chicks (Dew and Taps) also hatched - Taps didn't make it and died about 10 days later. Solly and Dew were both banded on 6th November 2020 - Solly with the Orange Band and Dew with Maroon. Solly was also fitted with the first ever satellite tracker to be fitted on an Eastern Osprey in Australia.
Solly took her first flight on 24th November and made increasingly longer flights from the Barge first around the small Bay and then looking further around Port Lincoln.
On the 25th January 2021 she hunted her brother Dew off the Barge and we haven't seen him since. At the time he was quite strong so there is a chance he has headed to a remote area and he could show up (please let us know if you see an Osprey with a Maroon Band)
Then on the 2nd February 2021 Solly left the nest flew south along Proper Bay - past Coffin Bay and then (most surprisingly) Inland away before eventually heading back to the coast near Port Kenny. She spent some weeks around Streaky Bay to the delight of locals before eventually "settling" around Eba Anchorage where we were lucky to have this sighting of her.
She has chosen well, Eba is a shallow Bay protected by Kiffen Island where she spends the majority of her time. Its ideal Osprey territory. The tracker is still attached and we get twice daily reports but equally important is the regular sighting reports from locals (special thanks to Maureen Lee).
She is not expected to find a "home territory" for a year or so and is likely to look to mate around 3-4 years of age. She has already provided the most unbelievably important data for her species so let's hope she continues to thrive and we all continue to learn.

Calypso (Blue Band) has found a friend. Bazz Hockaday from Take 2 photography got these great shots this afternoon near Tulka. The birds were totally un-fazed by the people walking past on the busy walking trail about 50m from the tree. The question is who is the other lovely girl? Perhaps she is from the Wanna nest - both look about the same age - Calypso was from the 2019 hatch on the Barge.

Now, they have a trio. Hopefully all goes well this season, it would be great when all chicks make it. Fingers crossed.

Edit: Really not good to see that humans rubbish decorates the nest (fishing lines, ropes...). It can be dangerous.

The camera operator started morning with beautiful panoramic views
