Re: Ospreys and Eagles in Finland
Hi, shshen! happy new year to you!
( I think I remember that the same person how has contacted the Univercity of Oulu, promised to call them later too, and then to give information to the saaristomeri group. If there is no some special reason to go on the research of Koo, it may take quite long time. I don't believe that the researchers have anything to keep in hide ).

Thank you for update, Canuck! Jukka is in Central-Africa, in Cameroon and in Chad, on the shore of the Lake Lagdo. What beautiful area with lot of water and river.

Hi Jazzel and Olga...thanks for your comments.
I've been busy, so I couldn't log onto this site until now.
I don't know what I am feeling ...numbness, I suppose. I just visited the Hailuoto site and....there are photos of Koo's skeletal remains
What happened???

Hello, shshen I didn't notice that news about Koo. There eventually are pictures of the skeleton of Koo. It seems that the leg was not broken on joint but in the middle of that 'leg bone'! If it had been noticed in time it had not been impossible at all to help recover in right position, I think. Sorry my emotionality...
They have named Koo with a new Name, Nätti Jussi, a legendary person, a timber workman in Lapland, about on the years in he first half of 1900. He had a deformed other foot, the heel was in front when he walked. But on the other hand, nothing to do Nothing to with our poor Koo, who could not help himself and no-one did!
I'll try to translate the texts under the pictures tomorrow.

Why on earth are those pictures on the page of some private person, I don't know. Did he own the bird!

Thank you for the translation. The link you indicated is restricted...????
A feeling came over me about Koo. I'm beginning to wonder if it was a birth defect. I am not well versed in bird physiology--if it was discovered early enough, maybe Koo's leg could have been corrected.
Thoughts, anyone???

This is what I posted on the BCAW site.
Hi Jazzel
http://kotinetti.suomi.net/saaksi/index.php
Okay...my computer is capable of translating the text. "Injured chick skeleton"
When I click on it, the pictures are blocked. Oops, now it works!
First photo: "Cute Jussi"
Skeleton: Osprey chick with a disability "Cute Jussi". Skeleton is the University of Oulu
Zoological Museum. The hunters found the chick out of a ditch 2km of nest in
early September. A boy had to put an end to 9.9.2009.
Second photo:
Foot: Chick boy injured left foot. Multiply that Cute-Jussi feet showed different directions.
Third photo:
Ring: These pictures are seen, carefully place the foot of the cross is gone.
Fourth photo:
Osprey luuanalyysia: The left leg tibia has gone to the cross section with feathers on foot,
ie the time from the topo. It is well ossified, but in the wrong
position. Sekeletal does not look too weak. (Matts Finnlund)
I can't follow my computer translation...wording is very confusing.

The bottom line for me is, Koo should never have been placed back on the nest!!!
Koo should have been taken to a rehab veterinarian for evaluation!!!
I don't understand why, when they have an ENGLISH choice on the nest cam site, they don't use it for issues regarding Koo!!! No problem getting instructions, to buy video access to their cam...lots of english there

"Nätti Jussi" = KOO http://kotinetti.suomi.net/saaksi/galle ... ranko.html
Skeleton:
The crippled osprey chick "Nätti Jussi". The skeleton is on in Animal Center, in University of Oulu.
The hunters found the chick in a beck 2 km from the nest in the beginning of September.
The chick had to be finished off 9.9.2009.
The leg:
The left leg was injured when the chick was infant. It is known that the feet pointed in divergent directions.
Bone anlysis:
The shinbone in left leg was broken under the feathers quite up in the leg, it was ossified but in wrong position.
The skeleton analysis showed that the leg bone seemed not to be apt to get broken. ( Matts Finnlund)

the osprey nest camera in Nauvo has been off-line since last Friday evening (Jan 29th). there's a message (dated on Feb 1st) that the data transmission connection from Seili island is broken, and that no estimate of when it will be repairedre is not given by that time. they are hoping the best...
well, it's Wednesday morning and the picture is still black... we have had a lot of snow also here in SW-Finland (like in Estonia at pig cam 1 site). maybe the heavy snowfall has caused problems, broken cables or something.

i just looked at the pictures of Koo's skeleton. i'm no specialist but to me it looks that the injured leg has had a really long time to heel, because the broken middle part is so thick and there are no visible 'seems' any more. all the lower part of the bone seems to be heavily deformed and thickened compared with the 'good' bone.
i guess the injury must have taken place when Koo was a very tiny chick, well before the chicks were ringed. and i guess that if the ringer hadn't left Koo in the nest but had taken her to the vet, Koo would have been euthanized earlier and we hadn't been able to see what a brave little bird she was... if - if - if... useless to think those other alternatives any more.

the text under the last picture goes:"Vasemman jalan sääriluu on mennyt poikki höyhenpeitteisestä jalan osasta, eli aika ylhäältä. Se on luutunut hyvin, mutta väärään asentoon. Luusto ei näytä kovin heikolta." which i think literally goes like: "the bones do not look very weak". i guess this sentence refers to the speculations that Koo might have suffered from lack of calcium and therefore had had weaker than normal bones. so this doesn't seem to have been the case.Ploughboy wrote:"Nätti Jussi" = KOO http://kotinetti.suomi.net/saaksi/galle ... ranko.html

this actually getting a bit ridiculous, just like Olga said: the Koo pictures can be seen in only the link that Ploughboy gave us... if you try any other, it's access denied. this VP-guy did not own the bird. i can't understand how this can be....
i just called to tell that the Nauvo camera is still off-line.

Thanks to ALL of you for your updates on Koo....a day doesn't go by that I don't see the picture I printed of him/her in my spare bedroom - looking at those beautiful eyes. I tried to look at the site where the skeletal remains were just because that interests me but every time I clicked on the picture it flashed quickly and then disappeared. Are these photos restricted? Looking forward to seeing lots of activity in nests this spring. Enjoying the Norfolk Botanical Garden cam of eagles sitting on two eggs. Also, love to watch Hancock's Sidney eagles.....not sure I can watch the Halioto cam this year after last year's sadness but may try. I don't have that link anymore. Have a good one everyone!
