Jedwabno Forest District, Poland, Masuria
( = Napiwodzko-Ramucka Forest )

Today in the early morning the first liltle one was hatched :bounce:
Two videos by SPietrek

1 - The little one is coming :

2 - We got it :

And btw, today during feeding at ~15:47 it is clearly heard other pipi, so I think the second hatching is on its way :)

Mum is born in NE Latvia and ringed as a chick in her natal nest on July 11, 2016 ( red ring 3A0 ), 550 km from Jedwabno. What interesting, she already visited our nest in June last year :).
By Polish YT-chatters she was named Łotewka, what means like a woman from Latvia ( like, but not exactly, more sweetly ). But some Latvian chatters like to use easier to say 'lady Anna' :) No matter, we are open :).
She is 5 years old and probably she is mum for the first time.
Happily, dad Napiwek / Napi is experienced and surely help her, he was excellent dad last year
The previous Napi mate Jedwabna went missing over Sahara last autumn, unfortunately :( [ she had a transmitter ]

We have very little ospreys in Poland, only ~27-28 breeding pairs, and we are very happy that Napi found a mate this year, so quickly. We were even surprised a bit, because this spring Napi's nest was visited by four females one by one ( one was a German - Helena ) and Łotewka was the fifth.
It must be she got liked, fell in love for Napi and his nest, or maybe some pheromones worked ... ;), anyway she decided to have here her home with him :shake: and we are very, very happy :)))
And five days later she laid their first egg :loveshower:

Poor little chick in Urdaibai.

Bird albinism is a genetic mutation that results in the lack of an enzyme essential to produce melanin.

Bird albinism has several disadvantages for birds like
- An increased risk of predation
- Plumage deterioration
- Inability to find suitable partners
- The red eyes of the albino are more sensitive to sunlight due to the lack of color pigments, which can affect the bird's vision when hunting.

Dear Bea,

sorry for being meanly. Albinism and leucism is not the same. The chick has red eyes so it is very likley an albino. Birds or animals with leucism normaly have colored eyes.

Also the birdcenter in Urdaibai call it albinism:

But of course - like you - I wish all the best to the little chick!

Unfortunately our little Albino has not made it here in Urdaibai.

Zuri could not seem to feed properly these days, and tonight in the last feeding we can only observe an inate body.

We must console ourselves with the other two strong chicks, the first here in a century.

Urdaibai, Spain, June 4

RiP Sweetheart, Zuri, I am extremally sorry that your life here
was so uncomfortable, maybe painful, and so short
Zuri, may you grow up there, somewhere
over the Rainbow Bridge
May you soar high there and be forever strong, brave, healthy and happy osprey, and always having full crop :2thumbsup:

Jojo, hello :)
I am really very sorry for your loss :((( and wish you the others two will grow up healthy and strong :)))
I know that this is no consolation for you now, but I am sure that the birth of Zuri and her/his short life will be remembered for long time by ornithologists and all ospreys admirers.
And once more thank you that you put here an info about this beautiful nest and the Spanish Project of ospreys' reintroduction, of inviting them to breeding in your country :)
I understand how serious is the problem, because here in Poland we have very little ospreys, only 27-28 breeding pairs and are taking steps to have them more, using the EU founds, among others.

P.S. It seems to me Zuri was blind and was not able to catch, did not see  pieces of fish seldom (!) given just her/him by mum, so s/he was becoming more and more dehydrated and this way loosing all vitality, energie ...
Really very sorry :( ... and maybe it was only one, the first visible, of many future troubles if s/he would survived, who knows ... Anyway the pain is not less :( ...

URDAIBAI, SPAIN 2021: Sad News...
"Zuri, the albino osprey which was born in Urdaibai, has died. Zuri started life with the a big disadvantage as s/he was the smallest and youngest of the three chicks. It is also possible that this chick was visually impaired, which made feeding difficult. At all times, Landa, the mother, prioritized the feeding of the healthiest chicks in order to guarantee the viability of the brood. This is something that occurs frequently in nature. It is natural selection and part of the life cycle.

Goitzsche Wildnis

The two offsprings are grown nicely. The third egg was most likely not viable.

June 15th

Unfortunately no good news from the Ospreys of the Goitzsche-Wildnis-Cam.

On the evening of June 12th, one of the young Osprey lay lifeless in the nest. The cause is unknown.
Now all hope remains for the only young of this season.
