Recording sounds

Post by Jo UK » March 22nd, 2009, 12:29 pm

AS we are interested in identifying birds by their song, this topic is to help us to learn different ways to record sound and put a link to the file on the WtE "Other birds, animals near the nest"

Verlit is first with a "How To"

Anyone who records sound, please tell us how you do it, what programs you use, etc.

Regarding sound recording, I have no sofisticated audio card and for watching cameras I use simply WMP.
This is the way I use to record up to 1 minute of sound: Go to Start Menu - Programs - Accessories - Entertainment - Sound recorder - and then just pres red button.
After you have recorded the sound you need to save it so that it does not get overwritten by the next sound you record.

(I hope I got category names in English right, I have system in Czech at home)

I have found a site, that host your files for free.
So, when you have saved them to your own files on your computer you can download them to this site.
Then you will get an address for them. Then just post the address on any forum or website.
As an example, my first ever sound download (thanks verlit  ), a car sound on pigcam:

Does anyone have a good tip about sound recording programmes? The sound recording of video recording programmes is often bad. Last year I used Soundtap free trial which was ok but I can't get it anymore. I have Adobe Soundbooth which must be perfect but it is very complicated. Thank you!

When using Potplayer for watching the webcams and other video's, recording sound is very easy.
Use the shortcut SHIFT-G (or in the menu Audio>Audio Recording>Record Audio ...). A small window appears and stays until you close it.
If you haven't set your destination map('storage') and format already, do so. Now you can simply push the start/stop button when you like.
To keep the start button in sight, do not view the video full-screen.

At the moment I use for hosting recordings. It is free and no registering is needed. Only mp3, with a maximum size of 15 Mb. That is around 15 minutes.
