As I translated Bear life hidden in snow carpet today into German language, one very sentence caught my special attention:

„A reminder – during the winter sleep they will not feed or drink, defecate or urinate“

Since January 2011 I translate all the Daily Updates from the Wildlife Research Institute (WRI) in Ely, Minnesotaa, USA which are coming into German language and also put the links to the updates here in the forum, The Black Bear Cam – Lily and Hope

The updates are mostly written by Dr. Lynn Rogers himself, who is looking back on 50 years of wildlife research and the Blackbears are his main target. For years he used den webcams at the dens of (wild living!) Black Bears during hibernation time, where not only he and all interested peoples around the world could not only witness the births of many Black Bears, their growing etc., but of course also their mothers behaviour.

Due to these unique webcams he and all the people watching, could experience, that Black Bears not only eat snow during hibernation, but also go to urinate and defecate.

And I guess what Black Bears do, also the other Bears will do! What do you think?
Have a nice day!

:hi: Brit.
have just discovered this post.
Actually, I know that there are different hibernation styles, but so far also thought that bears are real sleepers.
i have now read about it. It is more a kind of solidification state in the winter in which bears fall during the winter.
So there are several ways to go through this time of year (the solidification can also differ) (...sounds interesting for me to spend some winter like this)

Do bears actually hibernate?

Your contributions "The Black Bear Cam - Lily and Hope" had escaped me so far completely ( ). Interesting, and a lot of work, over such a long period of time.
Chapeau  and thank you!
