Action programme for white-tailed eagle protection. Estonia, November 2013
"The white-tailed eagle is a quite widely occurring bird in our coastal areas, large inland water bodies and rivers. Its numbers have recovered over the last decades but the earlier historical level has not yet been achieved. As an estimate 220-250 white-tailed eagle pairs live in Estonia at present. Centuries ago the number of the species was certainly larger.
The risk factors for white-tailed eagles are various environmental toxins but also lead shot used for hunting. The number of suitable nesting trees decreases, and nesting areas are destroyed. No less important are disturbances during the nesting time, quality decrease of feeding areas, and killings at power lines, wind power farms and roads.
The aim of the long-term action plan for protection approved by the Ministry of Environment is to enable the recovery of the number of white-tailed eagles and the preservation of the species as a population of at least 300 pairs. Six eagle species nest in Estonia – osprey, golden eagle, white-tailed eagle and short-toed eagle and greater and lesser spotted eagles, all needing strict protection."
