1.World first as sea eagle’s childhood is recorded. UK (Scotland, Isle of Mull), January 2013
A sea eagle has flown into the record books as the first in the world to have his entire childhood history recorded – from birth to meeting his mate.
RSPB Scotland Mull officer, Dave Sexton, who has followed Mara since he fledged in 2008, said:
“He is a world first. His whole life, from being a chick in the nest to being an adult with a mate and a nest of his own four years later has been mapped and followed via space-age technology, using a satellite tag."

3.A genuine Norwegian White-tailed Eagle has been witnessed flying above Shetland's north isles for more than three weeks. UK/Shetland, January 2013
No wing tags could be seen, so the observer assumed it might be a genuine vagrant from northern Europe and not one of the White-tailed-Eagles from the Scottish reintroduction programmes.
It was possible to take a picture from the immature bird, and the colour ring combination was identified. Björn Helander, coordinator of the WtE ringing project for northern Europe, confirmed it was a Norwegian bird of authentic origin.
The last of the native Shetland population was shot in the north mainland in 1917. It was also the last individual from the whole of Scotland.

15.The riddle of the eagle deaths is almost solved. Germany, February 2013
In the UNESCO biosphere reserve Upper Lausitz Heath and Pond Landscape several White-tailed Eagles were found dead during the last years.
According to Dirk Weis, expert on the protection of endangered species, 11 of 21 Eagles died of lead poisoning. Two birds were poisoned by a pesticide.
Lead poisoning is still one of the most important causes of death in White-tailed Eagles in Germany (25 per cent). The birds are being poisoned by eating lead fragments in shot birds, carcasses or gut piles. Meanwhile lead shot was banned for waterfowl hunting in Saxony with intend to protect the eagles, because in this region about 50 per cent of these birds died of lead poisoning.
