Ain't it funny how time slips away? Not to long ago we were excited when one of the girls swallowed a fish tail by themselves.Birdfriend wrote: 18:29 Fish bomber Mikk delivers again to Cecilia.

It's really amazing between the two ospret cams. On Irmas and Jooseps nest it is still much brighter than here.Luz4711 wrote: 20:12h ... and it is getting dark.

An acquaintance to me with biology studies meant that the egg laying itself is a big burden to the female birds and they perhaps therefore need to leave the nest life earlier than male, in order to get enough recovery. Any opinion in this question is welcome!Owlie wrote:Has anyone (@Kukelke?) a theory why the female osprey leaves for migration first, before other family?

It is thought that osprey females migrate first because their job is basically done, and from an evolutionary point of view it makes no sense to stay longer only to compete with one's own offspring for food resources. Thus females go first as a rule. Note that there are exceptions where youngsters go before the female. Maya on the Rutland Manton Bay nest is such a female; two of her osplets have already begun their migration and she's still around. But as said, most of the times the female goes first.Owlie wrote:An acquaintance to me with biology studies meant that the egg laying itself is a big burden to the female birds and they perhaps therefore need to leave the nest life earlier than male, in order to get enough recovery. Egg laying is indeed a big burden for birds as it takes a lot of calcium to produce eggshells, but not much of a problem for ospreys who eat and digest almost all of the fish, including the bones which consist of calcium.
Also a thing to bear in mind is that there are individual differences between ospreys, just as in humans or other animals. Some tend to migrate early, others tend to stay a week or two longer. In 2013 Irma was last seen the 23rd of August, in 2014 the 21st and this year the 19th. We don't have such stats for Mai yet, so we have no idea if Mai is a late or early migrator. This is her first year of breeding after all.
One thing is pretty sure: Mai doesn't stay because she thinks that Mikk isn't a good provider. I saw mikk deliver 4 fish in the course of 30 minutes, so a mediocre provider he is not.
Neither does Mai stay because her offspring hasn't learnt to fish yet. Almost no osplet knows how to fish before they start their migration. This is one of the instincts they have embedded in their genes, and they will learn it as they go. The parents aren't giving any master classes in fishing where the osplets are being taught with an exam on the end.
Thankyou again, Kukelke! It is interesting that they are individuals also in this matter - Mai is her own in comparison with other LK cam ospreys. So there is no "worry" that she would be "late".

It would not have helped. Ospreys cannot open their talons (even when they wanted it) when they are hooked that firmly to something.Birdfriend wrote:Oh, Mikk, please deliver you the next fish!
I know from the ringers that something like this already happened during the ringings, when an ospret has grabbed the ringers hand, the ringer can´t unhook the talons from his hand, he has to wait until they re-open by themselves.
Imagine it like a cramp at humans, you can´t stop it, even when you want it.
