Re: Estonian Black Storks Migration 2021 from Birdmap

Post by Jo UK »

As a result of the discussion on this topic, it is clear that safety is the priority of most members here and so we have decided to change our map-making format.
From now each tracker map will run from 00.00 of the previous day's date, to 23.59 of the same date. If the bird has not travelled from the previous day's location, no map will be posted as there will be no new information to show.
In the event that a search or rescue is needed, then precise and current information will be available to a chosen group.

Thank you very much for your remarks dear Jo.
My only question is: who chooses this *chosen group*? Kotkaklubi or the Lk administrators ? :puzzled:

When a bird is found to be in difficulty, usually by indication of its tracking device,we send out calls for help in the country concerned.
Depending on the suitability and availability of those who respond we have been successful in finding a small group who have the skills needed to conduct a search and arrange whatever course of action is needed thereafter.
Finding such people and giving them information is a co-operative effort betweem the forum and Kotkaklubi. So we share the list of e-mails and phone calls and compare results.

Hellem
Anne thought that it was not necessary to make a trackermap today as most of the information is on yesterday's map.
For convenience I think we can continue at the usual times, unless the map-maker announces otherwise on any day. Anne is on the rota for maps today and tomorrow. My turn on Tuesday and Wednesday.
We had not discussed a change in posting times.

Does this mean that the previous day's tracker maps will be in the forum the next day at around 7pm?

I returned to the field this afternoon. From Juta's message "Tracker map 17.09 - 18.09.21 19.14", I parked in the supermarket parking in front of the Julge course. S/he stopped there. This is how it is on the left:

and on the right:

You recognize the playground where a picture of Julge was taken.
I think she went may be into the Park on the left. It is bordered by the Suippe. Further to the left, the private pond:

In Heutrégiville she went where the Aussonce stream flows into the Suippe.
Liz 01: it is a region of industrial agriculture, it is true. But there is still life! On each side of the Suippe, there are woods, meadows, marshes, gardens, orchards, chickens, sheep, apiaries ...
I took pictures:

I think we have to trust Julge. S/he's not the only one black stork in this location.

At this precise place, on the right, one of the photos of FB was taken (the one where there are rails; it is a closed railway).
S/he finds at least some insects and I hope some frogs.
Have a good night!

20. september

Good morning!
Article on Looduskalender.ee

GT with little corections

The young bird Julge has soon travelled two and a half thousand kilometres on its migration.

But Julge has been "too brave and trusting" to move around in human settlements.

Such behaviour can be fatal for an otherwise covert bird, despite the fact that most people are sympathetic to rare birds, but there are other unforeseen dangers by domestic and predatory animals in the vicinity of settlements.

Information on the locations of such birds spreads quickly on social media networks, and there are also plenty of people interested in meeting and taking a picture of them - this is already the life of the 21st century. Hiding location maps or other commands or prohibitions does not help…

Many ask what to do?
