I'll take a look at it, Juta. At Udu's data session, I mean.

EDIT:
Udu is still in the same area. Which is not very surprising as it has been raining all day today.

UDU decided to fly southwards. :slap:
S/he is a little bit northeast of Larissa.

Larissa is the capital and largest city of the Thessaly region in Greece. It is the fifth-most populous city in Greece with a population of 144,651 according to the 2011 census (181,713 est. 2018). It is also capital of the Larissa regional unit. It is a principal agricultural centre and a national transport hub, linked by road and rail with the port of Volos, the cities of Thessaloniki and Athens. The municipality of Larissa has 162,591 inhabitants, while the regional unit of Larissa reached a population of 284,325 (in 2011).

Hello everyone :hi:

.
Hello bigfan.

We have been discussing the different possiblities when little Päike was in Greece, in 2018
https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... 11#p618911

Theoretically, I believe that there are 4 possibilities for storks (being in Greece) to reach Africa.

Image

1. Following the coastline towards Turkey.
2. Crossing the Aegean Sea (via the little islands) towards Turkey
3. Crossing the Mediterranean Sea via Crete, towards Libya.
4. The itinerary via Italy and Sicilia, towards Tunisia. ???

Route 1
"In studying the data, the researchers found that while storks from Greece, Poland and Russia followed their traditional routes, those from Germany, Spain, and Tunisia did not fly as far as before, stopping short of the Sahara; storks from Armenia did not fly very far, and storks from Uzbekistan did not migrate at all, instead choosing to feed on local fish farms. Those that stopped short of the Sahara appeared to do so because there was ample food in garbage dumps in Morocco."
https://phys.org/news/2016-01-white-sto ... e.html#jCp (Solo's link)
However, I fear that Udu will not fly back northwards. BS are 'programmed' to travel in a predominantly southerly direction during their autumn migration.

Route 2
"...Even though the main migration path is the Bosporus Straits and the Turkish coast, flocks of hundreds of birds can be seen flying over the east coast of Athens, especially Cape Sounio...."
http://greekbirding.blogspot.com/2013/0 ... inias.html

Route 3 is also used by small numbers of storks
"KANELLIS (1976) mentioned that small numbers of White Storks migrate via the southern Peloponnesus and Crete towards Africa."
https://www.researchgate.net/publicatio ... ece_200405 (= Solo's link)
This route is known but very difficult. Many (juvenile) BS do not survive the crossing. And even if they make it, the problems are not over yet. On arrival in Libya it will be very difficult to find food and fresh water.

Route 4
I have no idea if route 4 (the part from Greece to Albania —Italy) has ever been observed... ???
I don’t think it’s likely.

The last, and probably best option, would be for Udu to find a good wintering place in Greece.
But where?

We can only hope for the best…

:hi: Good afternoon Anne and everyone

why are storks equipped with transmitters and nobody thinks about the smartphone? ... now we could call Udu and tell Udu what to do.
Someone wrote a few days ago; nature will fix it. I hope so (in a good sense).

Good afternoon Sova

Yes, then we could draw up a nice flight plan for Udu. :D
He could fly over the Aegean Sea towards Bodrum in Turkey, hopping from one island to another...
And we could keep an eye on the weather forecast... to make sure he always flies with favourable tailwinds...

Edit:

Figure 21. Main migratory routes of European Black Storks, based on literature, satellite tracking, colour ring recoveries and migration counts, re-drawn by the author (Tamás Enikő Anna)

The Mediterranean migration route

Breeding and MIGRATION of the Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), with special regard to a Central European population and the impact of hydro-meteorological factors and wetland status
Tamás Enikő Anna; Doctoral (PhD) thesis, 2012
... The Mediterranean migration route is represented only with around 0,2% of the Black Storks in the autumn passage, according to observations and recoveries mostly 1st year and immature birds, a significant number of which is not proven to survive (or proven not to survive).
Migrating Black Storks are in low numbers but regularly observed in Greek islands (pers. comm. Kakalis, Noidou). The number of these individuals totals 15-20 in autumn, according to observers. However, the targeted wintering grounds and the places of origin of these birds are still unknown; there was one case when a first calendar year Black Stork colour-ringed as pullus in Croatia was observed in Crete (pers. comm. Mikuska). ...

Fingers crossed for little Udu.
