Hellem

It looks like our juvenile BS all want to do something exiting and unexpected this year.
And Lesbos is certainly a gorgeous island. :D

Gulf of Kalloni
The Gulf of Kalloni will remind you of a large lake.
The narrow and shallow passage creates the appropriate conditions of temperature and nutrients for the famous sardines, oysters and scallops mainly propagated in this Gulf.
The scenery of volcanic rocks, olive groves, pine forests and wetlands and the salt-pits, create a truly impressive formation.

The Kalloni valley is home to many different species of birds, which stop in the marshes on their way to and from northern Europe and wildflowers. Actually, the Wetland of Kalloni Gulf is one of the most significant parts of the ecologic assets of Lesvos.
Thus Kalloni attracts many birdwatchers and botanists especially during spring and autumn where most birds, and wildflowers are observed.
A mosaic of salt pans, small rivers and torrents estuaries, reedy-areas, pine trees woods and olive groves give natural shelter to numerous rare and protected species of birds. Therefore, the area has been placed among the European Program “Special Areas of Nature’s Preservation” of the net NATURA 2000.
At least 134 species of birds have been registered, 66 of which are migratory without having included the particular species of the neighbouring terrestrial ecosystems.
Among the various bird watching sites across the island, the Kalloni Salt Pans is without doubt one of the best. This area is a natural shelter and a breeding place for a great number of rare and endangered bird species, a magnet especially for wetland species. The wider area of Kalloni Gulf gives shelter to 252 bird species, 87 of which are protected. But what is most important is that 101 species of birds nest there, a number particularly notable, while 66 species are migrating. Species like ruddy shelduks, avocets, black-headed buntings, white and black storks, glossy ibis, pink flamigos, shags, little Egrets, Gray Herons, swans ect. are encountered in the region. There are also elevated sheltered watchtowers around the area where bird watchers can stand hidden and view the birds feeding.

October 27th

Morning update
KATRIN

In the OrniTrack morning update, we can see that, today at 10:17 UTC+3 (= local time), Katrin was again looking for food in the Polichnitos Salt Pans in Lesbos.

Kalloni Gulf wetlands
The Kalloni Gulf protected area (SAC and SPA) includes 25 different wetlands, most of them coastal.

The Polichnitos Salt Pans are located north of Skala, just next to the last houses of the village.
Together with adjacent wetland areas (saltmarshes and seasonal ponds), it forms a 96 hectares wide wetland nearly half the size of the Kalloni Pans.
The usual overwintering bird species are recorded here: Avocets, Flamingos, Shelducks, Black Storks, etc.
It is a paradise for shorebirds, year-round. Also a very popular site for birders thanks to a drivable track that runs its perimeter, enabling the best of views and from a close distance.

On the 2nd of January (2019), Petros Tsakmakis photographed the (above) Black Stork (Ciconia nigra) with a plastic ring in the Polichnitos Salt Pans. After making contact with the Ukrainian programme for that species (through cr-birding) we got the life history of the bird in just one day! It was a female bird that was born last year (in a brood of 3) in a zoological garden from parents incapable to live in the wild. It was ringed in August 2018 and to reach Lesvos it covered 1120 km in 152 days. A very interesting finding indeed! In the beginning of the month, Lefteris Kakkalis had recorded 9 Black Storks in Polichnitos Salts Pans, while 2 more were present in the Kalloni Salt Pans.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... sp=sharing

Distance flown: 124 km
Battery level: 100%

Today KATRIN flew eastward, left Lesbos and returned to the mainland of Turkey. :D
She is currently in a wetland a little bit east of Çandarlı, Dikili district, İzmir province, Turkey

Çandarlı is a coastal township with own municipality within the district of Dikili in western Turkey's İzmir Province. It is a well-developed town and an important tourist resort. It is a fishing village, were a lot of daily life revolves around such, with many people having jobs surrounding the fishing industry, making nets, gutting and cooking the fish, not to forget the fisherman themselves. It has a small population in winter months of approximately 1000, but in summer the population nearly doubles with tourists - going all the way to about 2000, normally domestic tourists rather than international. Çandarlı is situated on the northern coast of the (Gulf of Çandarlı) and opposite the important industrial center of Aliağa, another district center.

Hi! :hi:
Many thanks, Liz, Hellem, Anne, for all this interesting information and updates!

Little Katrin knew how to choose a good direction!
It is a pleasure to read that "Uncle Eedi" is in his wintering area
For some reason, Saudi Arabia seems safer (to me) than Africa, but I may be wrong.

TRACKER MAP
KATRIN - OCTOBER 28th
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... sp=sharing

Katrin is in the same area a little bit east of Çandarlı, Dikili district, İzmir province, Turkey.
She is enjoying the Bakırçay Delta. :D

Bakırçay Delta is a delta system formed in the region where the Bakırçay river, between Bergama and Dikili districts, flows into Çandarlı Bay. There is a lagoon and various delta formations in the area near the town of Çandarlı. A semi-open dalyan consists of sea cowpea (Salicornia sp.), plains, small sand islets, the Bakırçay River spill into the sea, a salty lagoon and agricultural areas. In the Bakırçay Delta, water and Shorebirds such as cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), silver gull (Larus michahellis), flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) and charcoal sandbird (Calidris alpina) are seen in high numbers especially during the Winter period. During the summer period, the small terns (Sternula albifrons), swamp swallows (Glareola pratincola) and black-headed bunting (Emberiza melanocephala) are among the species that are regularly seen in the area. In addition, mid-Winter waterfowl counts are held in the delta regularly every year in the second half of January.
