It is not possible that we have lost all our storks at once.
I really hope there is something with connections and whatsoever.
I hope so much!
You are right, Juta. :hi:
Fingers crossed!

Our wonderful KARL II :loveshower:

Karl II's route between 22.10 and today, 27.10 (at 11:53)
The night areas are indicated

Karl's last known location

The Merowe Dam

Today, Karl II was flying (at 11:53) southeast of the Merowe Dam in northern Sudan.
(Today's missing data will arrive on the next data session, I think.)

The Merowe Dam, also known as Merowe High Dam, Merowe Multi-Purpose Hydro Project or Hamdab Dam, is a large dam near Merowe Town in northern Sudan, about 350 kilometres north of the capital Khartoum. Its dimensions make it the largest contemporary hydropower project in Africa. It is situated on the river Nile, close to and inundating the 4th Cataract where the river divides into multiple smaller branches with large islands in between. Merowe is a city about 40 kilometres (25 mi) downstream from the construction site at Hamdab. The main purpose for building the dam was the generation of electricity.

UDU

Udu started to cross the Mediterranean Sea on 25.10 around 10:15.
S/he reached the Egyptian coast near Zawya Haroun on the same day around 18:15
That was very fast! S/he flew about 450 km in 8 hours !!! The average speed was 56 km/h
I see speeds over the sea between 28 km/h and 91 km/h. That's enourmous over the open water. But Udu had a very good tailwind that day!

Image

S/he spent the night of the 25/26 in the desert, not very far from the coast, about 40 km to the south.

On the 26th s/he flew about 300 km further southwards over the desert, until s/he reached this area. It looks as if there is water in that area? What is this? Does anyone know? :puzzled: :help:

Image

Today, Udu flew less fast and covered about 170 km, first to the west and then to the southeast.
I think he must be extremely thirsty and tired by now and needs most of all fresh water and a good rest...
Please hold on, little Udu!
I hope you will still have enough strength tomorrow.

Near Farafra s/he will certainly find water and possibly something to eat on the irrigated fields... Udu is almost there. (But nevertheless it is still about 50 km…) I hope s/he finds that place…

Image

The Farafra depression (Arabic: واحة الفرافرة‎‎, pronounced [elfɑˈɾɑfɾɑ]) is a 980 km2 (380 sq mi) geological depression, the second biggest by size in Western Egypt and the smallest by population, near latitude 27.06° north and longitude 27.97° east. It is in the large Western Desert of Egypt, approximately midway between Dakhla and Bahariya oases.
Farafra has an estimated 5,000 inhabitants (2002) mainly living in the town of Farafra and is mostly inhabited by the local Bedouins. Parts of the town have complete quarters of traditional architecture, simple, smooth, unadorned, all in mud colour — local culture and traditional methods of building and carrying out repairs have been supported by its tourism. Often grouped within Farafra are the hot springs (hot sulfur springs !) at Bir Sitta (the sixth well) and the El-Mufid lake.

Udu - 5983 km (+989 km in 3 days), travelling, Udu crossed the Mediterranean Sea and sent data from his/her overnight place near Farafra in Egypt :D, Udu's overnight place (26/27) seems to be a very interesting area

There is nothing to eat in the desert for Udu.
That’s an extra problem for BS who manage to cross the Mediterranean. On arrival, after an exhausting (wing flapping) flight, they still have the immense Sahara in front of them.
Udu can probably do without food for several days, using his/her fat reserves.
But I hope Udu will find an oasis soon to quench his thirst (and maybe grab something edible) and rest a little... and then gets out of the desert as soon as possible.

Udu ‘choose’ the most difficult, the most dangerous route.

Hello!
Thank you very much, Anne, Juta, Hellem!
Bigfan :hi:

In the meantime, it was very difficult to write anything.
Wonderful news!
What amazing storks!

But now there are worries again... where to find food after long journeys...
... I'm also worried about Pikne :faint:

According to birdmaps, it seems that storks are stubbornly repeating their migration routes of previous years. Is it mapped that a young stork could change it if he found his first journey unfavorable, difficult? Thank you for your answers ... me, layman. :help:
