For UDU:
2. Crossing the Aegean Sea (via the little islands) towards Turkey- it will be O.K.
I hope so...

Jo, thank you!
UDU is still in the same area, near Larissa in the Thessaly region in Greece.
There's always something to worry about. Udu is located right in line with the runway
Bigfan
I hope so too!

Good morning!
Thank you very much for the updates!
And many thanks especially to Anne, this information (and map) is very interesting.
I hope Udu will do what Anne suggests!

He could fly over the Aegean Sea towards Bodrum in Turkey, hopping from one island to another...
And we could keep an eye on the weather forecast... to make sure he always flies with favourable tailwinds...

Anne, thank you!
On this map, which I always like to look at, is most clearly visible:
so sorry that little Udu did not head east when s/he was in Northern Greece...
S/he seems to be very hesitant.
If all these curves were straightened, s/he would have gone beyond Karl II, s/he has flown more than the others.
Maybe s/he'll change her/his mind? We've worried about her/him before...
As a nestling in Karula, s/he once spent the night alone somewhere away. With who?
There is too little help from the transmitters.
Smartphones are really necessary. We could lead him/her on the right path!
But if I'm serious about talking now, I'm a little afraid to look at these tracking maps.

From Greece there are only 3 options for the storks. (The Strait of Messina is only used by storks that fly over Italy). These are seldom observed routes that often lead to a dead end for the storks. There are huge casualties from illegal shooting in Italy and Greece.
There are also attempts to hibernate in Greece, but they don't know if it's successful.
The route across the Italian Islands is more successful for the storks. The black storks obviously use this route more often.

Yes, 'our' book!
Der Schwarzstorch
Gerd Janssen, Martin Hörmann, Carsten Rohde
2004, revised in 2013
I really like this book a lot. (But I fear the figures may be getting a bit 'outdated'. Some of the observations described are 30 years old, and some even older.)
I tried to translate the complete original text on page 262 of that book:
"... One thing, however, seems obvious from increased counts: Black storks use routes over Italian Mediterranean islands and over the strait between Calabria and Sicily (Strait of Messina) more frequently for a Mediterranean crossing to Tunisia or Libya than routes further east over the Greek island chains. However, the success rate of Black storks arriving in northern Africa during migration is still an open question. When migrating home, e.g. starting from Cap Bon (Tunisia), larger numbers have so far only been recorded when leaving the African mainland (1990: 181 individuals, 1991: 146 individuals).
In the meantime, however, successful Mediterranean crossings have also been recorded. The count of nearly 80 Black storks in April and May 2003 over the Strait of Messina (GANTLErr et al. 2003) shows that Mediterranean crossings over distances of 130 to 150 km are possible. The late arrival dates (especially in May) of the majority of these Black storks indicate that they are mainly non breeding birds, i.e. birds of younger age.
However, the crossing of the Mediterranean via Greece (Peloponnese), the Aegean islands and Crete is less frequent and probably often ends in a "dead-end street" (Sol0Z 1940). Individual wintering attempts resulting from this (including in western Turkey) cannot be completely ruled out. Furthermore, a not insignificant number of birds are shot illegally between Italy and Greece. The only transmitter-equipped BS to have chosen the Strait of Messina-route (so far) suffered the same fate as many other species of large birds (especially birds of prey). However, it is only through Black storks equipped with a transmitter that precise routes and evidence of successful longer flights across the Mediterranean can be obtained.
At almost all Italian and Greek migratory flyways, White storks are constantly recorded alongside Black storks (e.g. ZALLES & BILDSTEIN 2000). Often their numbers are higher than for the Black stork. A. CORSO (2000, written comm.) reported 460 White storks and 85 Black storks during the 2000 migration across the Strait of Messina. In 1999, however, 37 White storks and 139 Black storks. And in 2001, 30 White storks and 42 Black storks. ..."

Yes, Udu has been flying a very 'hesitant course'. That is not reassuring.
After a weird departure, Udu first flew a long way south-west, then south-east… but unfortunately then mainly south again.
If Udu had kept flying south-eastwards in Romania, s/he would not have had a problem now.
But no, Udu flies as if s/he is in doubt... as if s/he doesn't clearly ‘know’ where to go.
Tracking maps... I know, Heloise.
Following their migration is often not very relaxing. To put it gently.

Good evening everyone
Jo, thank you very much!
It's a shame that we don't see whether Pikne has stopped on one of the islands.
Big problem .... Battery only 15%

Hello, Sova
Yes, these leg-mounted transmitters are quite worrisome.
Their batteries aren't charging very well... they're not getting enough light, I think.
Thank you, Jo
Probably Karl II is already flying over Syria... Hopefully he will report soon!
Little Pikne crossed the Sea of Marmara like a pro!
Pikne is currently near Manyas (still in flight)
Manyas is a little town (and district) of Balıkesir Province in the Marmara region of Turkey.
The population was 6501 in 2010.

Little Udu is still on the fields near Larissa National Airport

Larissa State Airport "Thessaly" was built in 1912. It was the commercial airport of Larissa until 1997 when it closed for civilian traffic. Currently the airport is being used only by military aircraft of the Hellenic Air Force, whose 110th Combat Wing (110 Πτέρυγα Μάχης, 110 ΠΜ) is stationed there.
