February 22nd

 Hello to our updaters,
and all others too!

What do you think, will the spring migration of our storks begin soon,
in the near future? I hope they are all fine!

Hello Treia!
Good to see you.

I think we will indeed see the first Estonian Black Storks travelling 'on the radar' (birdmap) soon. :headroll:
It is going to be exciting! I also really hope that they’re doing well and that we will see them all reappear on birdmap.

If I am not mistaken, adult black storks which already have a nest, are the first to start their spring migration. They usually leave their wintering grounds between the beginning of March and mid-March at the latest. The northernmost (Estonian) birds usually reach their nest in early April. They do not want to arrive (too) late.

The juvenile, not yet breeding BS are in less hurry (and usually fly less far northwards too). They often start their spring migration up to one month later than the breeding storks. (or sometimes even later)

Of course, this is a generalisation, and there will always be individual differences. :D
Moreover, black storks wintering in (for example) South Sudan or Chad, have to fly much further (and thus longer) to get home than birds wintering in Israel.
