If anyone wants to let off steam about anything, this is the place for it.

Our usual rules apply - be polite and sociable.
Personal attacks and offensive posts will be deleted. Otherwise, rant away!

I am going to beg all of you (me too, of course) to be kind. You are all my friends and I hate to see you hurting one another.

I say to me each morning, if only I remember :book: : A bird that you set free may be caught again, but a word that escapes your lips will not return. A hero is someone who can keep his moutch shut when he is right.

Keep good every day in life. They will form a chain, where the beads you can count backwards, as the problems creep in your life.

:banghead: !!!
I have just lost 7 hours of a possibly quite nice day on my computer. I have learnt nothing from the operations. I am not even happy because it suddenly decided to unsnag itself. :vangry:
Got up at 6, thought just a quick look at LK front page. Something seemed to start to download. Computer became slower & slower, like cooling syrup going towards absolute zero. All screen views stayed on the screen in bits and pieces like a ghost army ...
What to do with the rest of a gobbled-up day? Will it just make the machine pleased if I go look at another? (Nice rest on the shelf - but it will be a dusty life, with no Internet, I promise ...)
Talking of time-consuming operations: cat was rescued from tree in Tallinn Botanical Gardens last night. It took 1 1/2 hours because rescue van with ladder couldn't / weren't let to drive on lawn. The cat promptly fled after rescue. Article, Estonian, with nice photo of cat, HERE

Now this is a funny topic! Like Liis, the only thing I rant about is my computer at work which always seems to know when something is urgent, or I need to go home, and then decides not to work fast enough! So I generally say a few not-so-nice words to it (which of course it completely ignores). Now my little red car - I give it a little pat every day I see it in the garage as I don't drive it too much - and ask how it is doing because it is getting old and I need it to start the next time I want to use it. (And now you probably all think I am completely crazy!!!) :rotf:

Helen, of course, we have to say "Yes, she is completely crazy" and secretly think "I do that, too"
Does your car have a name? I haven't decided the gender of my VW Passat yet - probably masculine though.

To Liis,I say, give it a kick..it will make you feel better.. and please do like me.
I have heard so many horror stories of people loosing their hard-disk to a ? virus or other that I got an expert (son) to go buy me an external back-up 'desktop Hard Drive " and fix it here to my computer while he was here in July.
Now I feel more confident about the stuff my 'puter holds...all those family photos and my darling grandchildren, are on this external disk. To me there is nothing more precious but as son pointed out..'The house could catch fire and you'd loose it anyway'... where did he learn to be so 'optimistic' ? :slap:
It cost me exactly 64 euros and the workman didn't charge for fitting it.. that is the price of peace of mind where computers are concerned.
(the next step should be putting all important papers and the photos on a DVD,put it in the bank, and 'Bob''s your oncle'......will I go that far ? Apparently I am equipped for that but don't have the faintest idea of how-to-do. )

Helen you are not alone..a lot of people I know have a nice 'nick-name' for their cars and great respect too. Giving it a pat in passsing is a great way to ensure it will start a) on rainy days b)in the depth of winter c) when you are late for work/dentists appt etc; and you have just missed the train/bus.
Yes,by all means keep your car happy,it will reward you a thousand times. :D
But don't forget to have the battery recharged after its been sitting alone and lonely a long time..!! :rotf:

I set fire to a photocopier once. Or rather it set fire to itself. And an ancestor of this pc exploded with a bang and a flash. (Motherboard/power supply blew up, I think). Not the car, yet..... I find I don't need so much a book of swear-words so much as a fire-guard, or a fire-extinguisher!

Jo, I don't have a name for my car, unless you can count "little car" as in "hello, little car!" Thanks to Mew & Modicum for their advice on checking the battery; I will do that. The car is going on a very long trip in about 2 weeks - all the way from Vancouver to Edmonton and back, about 2,200 kilometers!! I expect it will be tired when it gets back! (OK, sorry, have turned the ranting topic into a love for my little car topic. Will try to rant better & get back on topic next time.) :innocent:

:banghead:
Why is simple, dull, administrative fact info so hard to get on Internet?!
Why are we fed more & more colours & pics & moving things and ever less proper information?!

Tried to check some simple data about the EuroBirdwatch, or Pan-E. Birdwatch or ?? ... such as overview schedule for watching days - all countries may not do it on Oct 1-2, and some don't do it at all. And official name.
Said to be GREAT event etc. Tried (indicated) top organiser, Birdlife International - zero about this year's event on homepage. Searched homepage - praise and hurrahs for last year's event. :vangry:
Checked BirdLife Europe - Events: latest noted, 6-8 July.

It shouldn't take some 45 minutes & various fanciful Google combinations to find that well, yes, overall co-ordinators this year are the Swiss, and there is a site for it http://www.birdlife-extranet.ch/ebw11/.

(Official name is/was EuroBirdwatch11, and no, Denmark did not participate - apropos whether more people than usual might have been out watching for Tõnn)

Beautiful pics & colours & layouts everywhere along the way, of course.
Still: kick out all zippy layouters for some days, give us good data structures and GOOD search engines internally for sites (helps, a bit, even with messy and spread-out fact info).
The concepts for search engines were actually better when it all started with databases online etc. Grrrrrrr.

Sighh... somehow familiar to me, too - Liis!
So it came that I was soo relieved to recover the link which I forgot to save longer ago. It was the web page of a Baltic newspaper, in German...

Keyword time robbing internet searches...
Just yesterday a TV documentary about "The working client" inmidst of Germany's service offers like Post or Deutsche Bahn (railway) was to see. E. g. in case if you think it's easier to take part on internet offers on buying cashless, it will eventually take more than 1 hour to succeed...
Instead of wasting time this way it could be less frustrating to go out of your house and buy directly.
Although clients are increasingly built in as one part of certain services, instead of former real employees.
Not to forget there are low-cost hotel chains which offer a cheap stay via internet. But again, no personal service anymore - everything works with your code and so on.
Anyway- I have the impression, cashless systems (not only via Internet) are more daily and working better in Estonia. But what about the development of personal support here & there?
I miss it increasingly in Germany, and I'm really upset on missing accomodation sometimes!

 Summer Time Day
One of the nastiest days of the year. One hour is robbed from me. :vangry:
I don't mind getting up early but I want to feel virtuous about it.
Getting up at 6 and SEEING THAT IT IS 7 O'CLOCK ALREADY is depressing.

Can't remember the reason/s for summer time being introduced either.

Of course, when the "new calendar" was introduced people lost 11 days from their lives. And birthdays became a mess. But it didn't meet you every morning. :banghead:
