:rotf: I agree, Liis! Our time changed on 11 March, & I still do not feel adjusted, my entire bio-rhythm is out of sorts.

Same here, I am definitely not compatible to "summer time" (as it's called here too)! In the evening my body tells my "why do you want to go to bed already? It's only quarter past nine - hey, lets have some fun" and in the morning the alarm gets me in the middle of a deep sleep phase, when I hardly know who I am and the eyes won't open ...

But I have to go to work when it is still pitch dark  It was so nice the last days with the sun rising while I was on my way!

'What is the name of this webpage?' or 'What is the main color of this page?'

grrrrrrrrrr

I know that it has to be there to block spam bots but i never saw this at other forums.

Hello Alex,
if you include in your consideration that all the admin work is done voluntarily things look different. The more time the admins need to filter out spam-postings the less they have to keep the discussion kindly. And if you compare other forums with this one here and take into account how frequented it is (including the part of the Tallinn zoo friends that we do not see) than you may get an impression of how it would be without these questions at the entrance: they would need even more admins. So everyone has a bit more to do but the admins a bit less. :hi:

Hi Leonia

Thank you for your explanation.
I wonder how a spam bot could manage to register to a forum. It's really magic how the programmers could make such a crazy bot.
Maybe the register process has to be a little bit more secure to stop bots at that time then this questions at login were not necessary but i don't know about web programming so it is just guessing :whistling:

I am not sure we need to be too logical when ranting

BUT

I was not allowed to sign up for a canadian peregrine falcon forum because I had a gmail email address -- they said too much spam comes from gmail. I thought about signing up for hotmail (but didn't want all the spam that would net me, and was not sure that they would accept those emails either) and I thought about ranting and shouting -- what do you expect?? It is a very common email!.

Instead I stayed cross and never got too addicted to that cam since I could not participate.

-- here I only get asked spam questions when sending messages, so I cope.

That is sad, Alice. The webmaster for that forum could easily do what our webmaster does - I know we have good anti-spam measures but we still check each new member in person, I don't think that part of the checking process can be automated.
We have a good webmaster.. he has a gmail address - - - :D

PS - I have a hotmail address. The spam folder deals with whatever spam comes in, and I don't see it.

Alex, it is true - spammers are getting more clever, even as we develop better anti-spam measures.

One spam trick anyone here can watch out for - a link to a spam site, used as a signature. We don't want to ban links in signatures - too much valuable information would be lost . We just have to watch all the time.
If you see a link to something that looks like spam, please tell us.
We don't like spammers. We don't want them here, taking up our valuable space.

Continued from Eagles feeding viewtopic.php?p=201597#p201597
About the general flooding of Internet with TBs and more, just because we can do it - for now.
I loved Internet when it came. I can't imagine being without it, for the smart, rational, practical things I can do with and by it, and with PCs.
Because both help to clever, elegant, time-and-resources-saving solutions.

Yes, the forum is a totally negligible and innocent part of the connection congestions.
Yes, I can (and will, willing or not, new installation in building) get 100x faster connections.

But I hate having to have it, just to do and sift out the less than minimal percentage (promillage, rather) of things that I need from the increasing nuisance flood of MBs, GBs, TBs, .
To be sure, tastes differ. But have a look at ordinary newspaper Internet pages in advanced IT countries - such as Estonia: the screen is filled with moving, flashing, jumping adverts and images; some you can, some you can't close. And while you try to, one or another click takes you to a quite unintended page. Outside the general nuisance, that is a very real risk of getting virus and worse into your computer. I seriously try to remember to avoid the adverted companies.

I don't want to contribute to the general employment level by unneeded computer virus unsortings, too early new equipent buys, ever broader communication highways and rates (if space is there, fill it up! )

My rant is that development is for far too much bling and noise, and too little substance: for what Internet and PCs were supposed to be there for and to do: transmit information (all kinds), preferably also knowledge; transport it around; handle it; show it up nicely, clearly, logically.

(To get down from the general to specifics: yes, there are two problems, minor but still there, directly touching LK: - a general traffic congestion at times on Internet from Estonia to my computer; - the forum pages are generally much slower to load (again), even at the best of transmission periods)

Download "adblock", and all the "moving, flashing, jumping" adverts will gone! :whistling:

That's a good suggestion, I have adblock (using Firefox for browser since many years) for so long, I sometimes don't even know what people talk about until I see a website "normal" somewhere else. Of course not every site operator is happy about it, but since I have to live with their ads, they have to live with my adblock! It at least helps against advertisements!

Agree - it solves - some - of my computer and transmission problems at the moment - although any advertiser worth their money of course tries to overcome any Adblock developments!

It does however not solve the general problem of Internet overload. Yesterday a newspaper wrote about the problem óf IPs running out (again), new protocol needed.

I have subscribed to several lists that update themselves, since I have started to use it, I have not seen any ads. That does not solve the IP problem, of course

In advance I should say that I already belonged to the observers of Estonian nest webcams at times when the Looduskalender forum did not exist yet. It was the time when we talked about it on the Hancock Wildlife Channel forum. I was very happy when one day in November 2008 I got an enquiry to take part in the newly founded Looduskalender forum. Of course I took part there and though I rarely take part in the many different discussions there, I take part in the translations of main page articles for all those mostly elder German ornithologists that are not able even to read English articles.
During all the years the webcams were a great pleasure for us every year too, specially because we are most interested in birds of prey like LSE and GSE and in black stork, our most favoured bird. We have learned so much from those cams we would never have known without them!
And of course I was curious to go to Estonia myself and so we visited the country two years ago for a long ornithologist trip for more than three weeks. We circled the whole country and also were happy to meet some of the friends there personally we until then knew only via Looduskalender.
Already in spring I asked myself if anything would be planned for the 10th anniversary. So I was curious to read the two articles that have been published on behalf of this special date. And therefore many thanks to Urmas for his very interesting article!
...
About the second article which appeared on the subject however I could only wonder. Well, it is true when Epp Harmon writes that those who exchange in the forum "live all over the world: Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Russia, United Kingdom, Poland, Hungary, France, USA, Turkey, Canada, Australia forum observers also elsewhere ".
Honestly, not only me, but certainly also those admins and moderators of the forum might quite stumble that the numerically probably second strongest Looduskalender community in Germany is mentioned with no syllable. It seemes to have failed the author's notice completely how many people from Germany continously are actively involved in the success of the Looduskalender Forum?
:puzzled:

HI, Leonia.

Your post would fit very well on the Birthday celebration topic -

Please will you join us at the Birthday Celebration topic?

https://www.looduskalender.ee/forum/vie ... =110&t=947

Due to translation delays it has only now been possible to open that topic. The Estonian text was published on 19 September. Your comments about the Epp Harmon article should be seen with the eye of someone writing in 2010 - we think that is when she wrote it. I had to change some text as there was mention of TWO years and TWO meetings, so that must be when she wrote it. Maybe the strong German connection was not obvious to her, then. Perhaps Felis Silvestris would like to comment?
