the Winter Solstice is going to take place in the coming night (European time).
in Tallin and other countries which follow EET the exact time will be after midnight so it will be on Dec 22nd. in Central European countries it will be 3 minutes past midnight, thus on Dec 22nd as well, but in England at 23:03.
Image

on the other side of the Big Water the solstice time will be on Dec 21st. for example for Alice in Oregon the solstice time is on Dec 21st at 15:03. i took this information from http://www.timeanddate.com here:
http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/dec ... stice.html

they have on their page a picture showing the relative position of the Earth and the Sun at the solstice moment.
after the winter solstice the days are going to become longer again in the Northern hemisphere.
Image

the Earth's axis of rotation is inclined relative to the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun so that at this time of the year the area above the Northern arctic circle gets no direct sunlight at all. so there is constant night up there. the Antarctica on the other side of the Earth enjoys constant daytime. (i almost wrote 'sunshine' but that depends on the weather of course.)

i found a weather map for the Antarctica on this site.
http://www.accuweather.com/en/antarctica-weather
the temperatures are in Celsius degrees. the projection of this map is very weird: it is stretched so that the centre point in the bottom is the South Pole. it seems to be cloudy there and -25 degrees. in the coastal areas it seems to be sunny.
Image

more information about the solstice for example here:

today the Sun eclipsed in Northern Europe. in Finland the eclipse was partial.
see i.g.: http://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/2015-march-20

in the maximum phase about 81 - 94 % of the surface of the Sun was covered by the Moon. in Southern Finland (and in Turku) the eclipse was less full than in the Northern part of the country. here we also suffered of some cloudiness. nevertheless i was able to take some pictures of the eclipsed Sun and some were good enough so that i can show them to you, too.

i took pictures with the aid of my birding telescope. first i set the magnification to the smallest value and then looked up the image on a paper which i held about 10 cm from the eyepiece (ocular). then i turned on maximum magnification to view a bigger image.
first i had the scope focused to infinity as first approximation. then it turned out that Sun wasn't nearly infinitely far: i had to focus the image nearer. 8-)

the camera was quite normal pocket camera and i used automatics. noteworthy is that for some pictures the camera triggered flash. here's the scope:
Image

then two best pictures. these were taken at the maximum phase of the eclipse.
Image

i didn't have enough hands to hold both the camera and the paper behind the ocular so hubby gave a helping hand. :D
Image

during the darkest time it wasn't even close to dark. birds were singing normally etc. one could notice however that the light was different. hubby said that the light was more yellow than normally. i thought that the light looked kind of 'dirty'.
