.........we are planning to stay cat-free in the future.
We have done the same 8 years ago - after 30 years with several cats in two generations (they all reached 17-18 years). It lacks something.
still always...

This was the last dog in our family: A Bearded Collie (2003-2016) called 'Lasse'. He was our third Beardie (1st: Joscha (brown-white), he was poisoned  ; 2nd: Titus (black-white). Lasse's colour is fawn-white. He was the one that was the most difficult to groom, because his undercoat was so thick, and after a walk with him, you had to pluck out all the sticky things like burrs, foxtails, weed seeds etc. (plus ticks), a sheer delight for the dog and us. Beardies are herding dogs originally, no hunting instinct, which makes dog walking quite easy (exception: sirens of police and ambulance and such...) and still having the instinct to gather his human flock. He was my soul dog, maybe one day I will have the opportunity to own a dog again ... time will tell.

And now to something completely different: one of the most amazing pigeons I got acquainted with:

I have always been feeding birds. Then some of the so called "city pigeons" also discovered this food source - which gave me a lot of trouble. Anyways: I called this ash-red male "Prettybello" because I could not make a real choice between these two adjectives. He was the only pigeon that ever took food from my hand, from the first time on he landed on my window sill, and I think he must have known human care before. He was a real beauty (maybe a homer mix, if you look at his nose), strong, healthy, a wonderful character. One day, when he and his mate had taken their offspring to my place, the young one must have been attacked by a sparrow hawk (you could see the talon marks on his breast, the young one was in shock, too). Prettybello (not the female!) spent more than an hour to reassure his youngster, summoning him to come up to the roof (and I was relieved when I saw he could fly), always walking around him, never leaving him alone, such a tender parental care. - As I moved to another place some years ago, I don't know about his whereabouts, but he is a highly intelligent bird, and I don't have to worry much. But I miss this remarkable bird.

He has a mitral valve insufficiency and aortic stenosis. he get medication. so he does not notice anything of his illness. He was 21 months old when he came to me. The doctor said he will live only 3 -12 months. He has been living with it for eight years, without problems with this illness.

My Quincy died on September 14! he became, despite his illness, 16.5 years old. His best friend Girlie (female) is almost 20 years old.

Oh so sad to hear, Liz, i'm very sorry. Such a pretty 'Wonneproppen', Quincy, a Ragdoll i assume ?
It is always a big loss, even if he has lived so much longer than the vet predicted. I'm sure he had a good life and enjoyed every single year with you and Girlie.

sova, your cats were/are beautiful. I could fall in love with any of them instantly :loveshower:

I grew up with dogs but was in love with cats since I was a kid. Unfortunately, cats weren't something you liked to see on the farm. They were allowed to catch mice and were given cow's milk to drink (unhealthy) but I wasn't allowed to tame any and take them into the house.

When I finally got around to living where I could have pets, I immediately thought of cats.
A dog would do whatever it wants with me. I am not suitable for strict dog training. With cats, it's easy. When I have visitors and the cat is sitting on the table, I say cats cannot be educated.
Besides, I don't like oppression. Cats are free and do as they please, I love them for that! Dogs desperately want to be loved, cats are so, that they allow us to love them.

I worked in cat protection for many years, in my spare time.
It was beautiful, exhausting and very touching. I've never seen so much misery before. Helping these poor creatures to have a good life again gave me great joy!
I stopped working there because the misery of the animals increased from year to year. It was unbearable. There is a lot of animal suffering in Berlin! Dogs, cats, birds, whatever...

you're right! both were Ragdolls , blue colorpoint (Quincy) and sealcolor point (Girlie) I left them those names. The name Girlie is a bit weird, but a little girl chose this name. Ragdolls are real family cats. well suited for children. They don't bite or scratch no matter what happens.

I don't know if this cat is going to be an important animal - well, in a way she already is, because I am quite busy with keeping her away from my bird feeding place - and telling all the birds that a cat is hiding in the bushes, just in case they hadn't noticed (the blackbirds understand my whistles which I simply borrowed from them). But two days ago, I found her eating bird food (sunflower seeds, I think she was not interested in the raisins ...). She comes here every morning, makes her needs and seems to spend a lot of time on the grounds.
I just don't know what to make of her - is she a stray or not? She is very shy and often hisses and chatters when I come too close. But I got her with something I never wanted to do: I gave her some food because I thought: Sweetie, you don't have to eat my sunflower seeds. Yes, yes, gaining trust through food delivery. I have no idea if this gal (I think it's a she-cat) tricked me or not. I of course do not touch her, she would not endure it.

And, since I am a "dog-woman", I also have no idea what breed this is. I made the pic half an hour ago, and now she has curled up and sleeps. I find her coat really beautiful.

Cat and I are coming to terms. Catsnip-goodies and salmon treats did (and do) their job. Chattering and hissing at me stopped, she even allowed me to pet her softly when eating. She doesn't look like a neglected cat to me (rather like an intelligent female knowing where to get a quick snack. And she may be picky with food - if she were a truly homeless cat, I guess she would gulp down everything in a second and ask for more or turn up more often, calling.)

Image

Nice morning ritual: Since I work very early, she sees the light, passes by, we exchange greetings and she endures my blabbering nonsense into her ears. Then she watches the birds (my feeding place ...) and meditates in front of the Mouse Mansion under the rose bush. She leaves (important cat errands) and I only very rarely see her a second time on the same day.

Don't forget one thing, dear Susanne.😉...Cats often choose their owners / can openers themselves....
The little one is beautiful, very nicely patterned.😍 I think the little one is European domestic cat.
Enjoy the trust that the little one gives you.

:hi: Thank you Sova and Liz!
Yes, I was wondering about how to call the colour of her coat, it is not easy to describe: I compared so many pics of cats with a tabby or tortoise-shell( = 'Schildpatt') coat. This intelligent beauty was here so early in the morning: I had just turned on the lights at 5:30 and opened the door to air the room - there she was. Quick breakfast, then extensive preening, and a cool bye-bye. Either she has a nice cat-door at her home or her owner (I hope and guess she has one) is up as early as I am.
