KUREMARI, what a beautiful, heartfelt and soulful is that song....everyone participating
and SO sincere. As an Irishman(woman) I know the feeling, even if I don't understand the words. Can you explain a little ? Its problably political and patriotic ?
Hope to hear from you.

Hi Carmel,
i am very glad you liked it and got the essence of that very special song.
the story goes back to the time of the Singing Revolution, here a glimpse of it
http://www.singingrevolution.com/
this song Koit-Dawn is about hope and freedom.
i`ll try to translate a little:

it is time to straight our backs
and throw away the robes of slavery.
time to give rebirth to everything
we have created before.
It is dawn, the royal flame,
Victory of light awakens the land.
Look, the ice is broken,
give me your hand, let`s join our forces.
...this land, the sacred land of our fathers
is going to be free.
Sound of our victory song will be heard-
Estonia will soon be free - you`ll see.

Macdoum, can you imagine our feelings when we listen to that song about 20 years ago, when there was nothing sure yet? And it still means a lot. You feel that song very right! Thanks for that.

That is a perfect ending to a wonderful day. Thanks for all those posts in support of Estonia's Independence Day.

This topic will be made into a "standard" topic now and will find its own level among all the other topics.

Kuremari, Thank you so much for the link to that site. There is a short summary of Estonia's history there, I know so little and was so impressed to read about the Singing Revolution.

I also noticed this, will it be in Tallinn? (attention Jo and others planning a trip this summer):

2009 is the year of Laulupidu, the every-five-year song festival in Estonia where 30,000 people gather on stage and sing in perfect harmony. It was the 2004 festival that was filmed for "The Singing Revolution". It is truly an experience to have in one's lifetime and impossible to fully describe in an email. This year's festival dates are July 3-5.
