The eaglet (SE13) is thriving. It looks like the first feathers on his back start to come through now:

Bad news, it seems that eaglet SE13 suddenly died during the last hour.

From the chat:
baby was having a feeding from mum then finished had a small fit and slumped into the bowl passing away quickly and quietly
The camera is offline now.

I just watched the video of SE13's last minutes, and it looks a bit like some sort of stroke or heart failure to me, with cramps and things like that. A bit like what happened with Kaari on Ilmar & Irma's nest last year. And SE13 seemed to have difficulties with breathing as well (a too low breathing rate compared to what I am used to from white tailed eagle and bald eagle chicks).

Poor thing :(

 I have just read the news of SE13 passing. I wached last night & left when both parents were on the nest & all seemed O.K.
This is terrible news & sad for the eaglewatchers. The people in Sydney have had terrible luck with that nest. All seemed to be going so well.
A forum friend mentioned that they were not aurthorised to intervene. :slap:
Poor babe, you were doing so well........ :puzzled:

The nest camera is on again, but the nest is empty...

Scientists got permission from the authorities to remove the body of SE13 and the unhatched egg for testing. No results are known yet.

Both parents are around still.

:hi:
It's so sad, after failed last season such a unexpected misfortune
First findings by Sea-EagleCAM Team: "...SE13 and SE14 (a.k.a. eggbert) were removed from the nest this morning and taken to the Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) at Homebush for necropsy.

Early results from x-ray showed that there were no metal objects (eg. fishing hook) inside SE13 and no obvious external signs of what went wrong. Pathology results should be available in a few days. Necropsy results, sometime next week. Nb. This is not toxicology testing – we will look at that later.

The x-ray of the egg, showed that the embryo was approximately ½ - ¾ developed. Due to the length of time passed, resulting in the breakdown of contents of the egg, it is unlikely we will be able to get further information on cause of failure to hatch...."
Yesterday I saw parent inspected the nest.

September 17th

Story of the eagle's nest
The original nest crashing to the ground in February 2011, while the nest tree falling down after a long, dry, hot period.
In May 2011 the eagles built a new nest (no 1).
In May 2012 the eagles built another new nest in a different tree about 75 metres from the 2011 nest tree (no 2).
In April 2013 the eagles started to renovate the 2012 nest.
After the failed breeding season in 2013, eagles began a new nest (no 3) in a tree about 100 metres from last year’s nest. Then they returned to their old 2012 nest (no 2) and began renovations in earnest.
After the eaglet’s death last week they started nestorizing and mating on nest no 3 again. So maybe........
Yesterday's pics from the nest no 3
