They do already fly, but usually not very far from the nest and (all?) the food is still brought on the nest.Taube wrote:I think off as it gets long and they fly
They left the nest more or less on June 26/27, 45/46 and 42/43 days old. That is a normal age to fledge.
I think that the first real flight we saw(!) was on June 29.

There is very little visible activity today and we are half blinded by the missing sound.
The only deliveries on the nest today:
She is loosing one of her wing feathers.

July 2
04:25 A juvenile Robin was on the nest for some minutes.
At 05:05 a frog was delivered but there was nobody to take it over, so after waiting for three minutes she left with the frog.
Apart from the flies, that was all the movement so far this morning.
08:33 A Marsh tit/Willow tit on the nest.

June 13.
A not often seen situation: the whole family together for some seconds.
I suppose that the incoming bird is the male, with a vole.
Mother brought a vole a minute ago but she is feeding a big bird delivered thirty-five minutes earlier.

To me perhaps the most memorable episode of this season:
On June 11 it rained heavy all day. In the morning mother left the nest a couple of short times to hunt but with no success. That day no food was brought to the nest at all.
The previous day had been already very poor with only three voles and a rat. The last vole came as early as 13:08 and was eaten by one young only.
The next day (12th) started wet and the young had to wait many hours for food. We saw a couple of heavy fightings between the young, even over a pellet. In a fight for the first delivery the youngest chick was nearly killed. The first food came as late as 16:30 but after that first one came a long stream of 19 deliveries, mainly of earthworms.
The most lucky young had been over 51 hours without food, the other even over 56 hours.
