Is that what he is known as in Latvian?
That's what mega2 called it. Vērotāja has other letters, for example.
It's difficult this year with names.

in the afternoon it rained very hard for a long time. the white "paint" which Mr L threw on the nest was washed away. :whistling:
20:33 a little bird flew to the top branch and twitched her wings: a flycatcher.
the bird flew away but soon a flycatcher returned. she helicoptered above the nest.

at dusk thick mist floated in the forest.

this was what i could find in my archive. unfortunately i can't remember if there was something else, too. if you remember something more please add your observations and remarks here.

btw: he didn't bring anything. thsi could also be his normal check-out visit.
What do you think about a theory that the dark eyed eagle is a female, maybe the same that appeared with Me L in September 25, but did not come to the nest?

ame wrote: May 10th, 2021, 10:05 am Sonchik, you know wrong. of course you are not the only person who has watched eagles from dawn to dusk, day after day for many years.

i am also well aware of the behaviour characteristic which is commonly called "the crop drop". i have seen this behaviour dozens of times, performed by both adults and eaglets.

i am simply not convinced that the behaviour is the process which usually described in this context. i have a hunch that food transfer from crop to stomach is a layperson's explanation to this puzzling behaviour.

so far i have not found any professional explanation for this behaviour, either scientific or in falconry (raising and training birds of prey). it would be very interesting to find such information. so far all the links i have found have led to the American bald eagles.

pretty lousy weather here- so I have time to read back.

The crop serves to store the food temporarily and the food swells during this time.
The pre-soaked food is transported through contraction the crop wall, further into the stomach.
The stomach is divided into the cranial gizzard and the caudal gizzard.
There is no such thing as a crop drop with open beak! We would not see if the food is being transported

BTW:not every bird has a crop!

I'm very saddenend by the passing away of Nordri.
He made such beautiful videos.
And so often helped with identification problems by posting excellent tail pics.

One of his last videos (s.below) I saw here was the one about the unexpected disappearance of Raimis in March this year.
Now, it seems, Nordri has followed him.

Sad news that NORDRI is no longer with us, especially as he doesn't seem to have reached high age.

What remains is the memory of a very pleasant, unobtrusive contemporary who has enriched us with his unique artful videos and excellent closeups that keep him in honorable memory.

Nordri's passing was a great loss for us in the forum but i'm sure it was even more so for his loved ones. my thoughts have been with his family and 'real' friends many times during the weeks after we heard the news. my deepest condolences to them.
