13:49 a raven visited. he purred hrrr...

14:35 a very spotty young eagle came! :loveshower:
unringed, with huuge beak so it's probably a girl . probably 2nd calendar year (hatched last summer).
no she has a ring, only one but it's very dirty!
i can't even make sense of the colour(s). the ring is so muddy... does it have L4 on it... L would be Lithuania but then the colours should be blue over red. besides the letter cannot be so tall... :puzzled:
Image

she looks funny: the head and beak and eyes are so dark that they look like she's hatched this summer, but the back and tail and stomach were so spotty and light that she must be older.
a beauty! :loveshower:
number 5? maybe 55??

she had a long look at the camera. :whistling:
Image

i think that the 55 is rather clear. let's see if mega2 got better pictures... not yet.
Image

here a close-up clip of the ring in slow-motion (1/5 of normal speed).
i'm afraid that it will not help much. :slap:

14:37 she flew away.

i took Sunshine's picture from DD and magnified the ring a little.
Image

i made two more pictures
Image

the numbers look like 455 but what are the colours? probably Latvian? there should be letter H but i can't see it in any pictures. also the colours are unclear. :faint:

 and i failed to see it first.
yeah, and brush the feet really well. what a sloppy girl, coming like this with dirty feet to get her picture taken.
tsut-tsut-tsut, no-no...

16:53 two ravens came to check the nest again. they are upstairs, singing and clicking and clocking to each other.

one of them came to have a good look at the camera.
Image

he looked at the camera as if he had never seen it before. are they tourists? :whistling:

they were out the view for a while. then one raven came back and climbed to the left side... i think he pulled the wires, there was a jerk on the camera.
is he going to knock the camera off? :slap:
Image

16:56 they flew off but they are still there...

i saw that in the chat people were asking about the colour codes on the rings:

Ame & Liz - thanks for your answers

Sorry for the lost pics. So, things are much better now with the YTube.

Yes! I didn't tell you :rotf: I already opened the secret doors of the Central Station.

Yesterday my sister asked me if we saw the angel since; I said she is not back and we really miss her, like a lost relative

I don't like Ravens, crows etc, When they come - I go to check on other eagles. :innocent:

Ame, why is it so important to cut Sweden and Finland to many regions?

If you see the data on the ring, you know it's Swedish or Finish so one can get the needed info there. It's not enough?

Oct 28

good morning!
it's still very dark, only some blue light is in the sky. it sounds like rain... not much wind.

Abigyl, in the time when colour ringing was started the numbers of eagles were low and the known territories were in a few areas which were more or less separate from each other. the distance between SW Finland and Åland is not very long but both Finnish and Swedish Lapland are a long way up to north from the southern parts of Finland and the distance to southern Sweden is longer still. the distance from Turku to Sodankylä is about 1000 km and takes 12 hours to drive in good conditions. from Turku to Mariehamn (the capital) in Åland it takes "only" 5 hours but the boat travel from Mariehamn to any of the small islands much longer. i don't have exact information but i guess that this gave a practical reason why the countries were divided into these regions. there were few men who did this ringing job and they divided the country in these regions to minimize the time and effort needed in the work. each one took a region and got their own set of rings.

afterwards it has been discovered that eagles behave somewhat in a similar way: the populations in these different areas seem to be somewhat different. both ring data and satellite tracking data. Baltic eagles stay on the Baltic area, Quarken's eagles in their area, and Norwegian eagles stay on their side of the mountains. Swedish eagles stay on the Swedish side and migrate to SW Baltic or to the Atlantic side, Finnish stay eagles on the eastern of the Baltic and migrate to south to the eastern side of the Baltic sea. even more importantly genetic information seems to suggest that the populations have different mixture of genes in different areas. (i have seen a diagram of these results but i could not find a reference for it; it's too early.)

edit: i checked maertha's The Haliaeetus Albicilla Collection for references on this subject using search word genetic. there are several articles containing this word.
viewforum.php?f=46
not all have information about the genetic diversity of populations which is in question here, but there are many relevant ones.
i'll be away for most of the day.

people write in the chat that they heard gunshots. i'm not surprised: it's weekend and hottest hunting season.

10:07 it is raining: there are drops on the lens. this is no eagle weather.

Good Morning and many thanks for the interesting information.

In our days, with all modern technologies, it looks easier. But I didn't think about the time and distance and the difference between the eagles.

has it been like this all day: raining?
the sticks seem to be in the same order as they were in the morning.

MĀRIS has spotted a raven at the nest at 15:02.

good morning Abigyl and all!

no eagles have been seen or even heard this morning although the weather looks nice now. the sun tried to peek over the horizon and behind the branches in the centre but clouds came on the way.

remember that we have changed to the normal winter time now.
change the board preferences accordingly:
User control panel in the upper right corner, then
Board preferences on the left, then
Summer Time/DST is in effect: No.

9:06 a jay visited the nest quite quietly, strange.
the white rump shone bright white when the jay flew away. it is as good a signal as the WTE's tail.
rump: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rump_(ani ... hology.svg
Image

in addition to the white rump the jay has big blue&white areas on the wings. from a larger distance the white spots stand out.
Image

mega2 and lienaliasma have made many more pictures of the jay:

13:16 Raimis came with a fish. one or two ravens were accompanying him. :whistling:
he stayed for a minute or so and then flew away with the fish. a few seconds later there was a sound like someone touching the top of the tree or landing on it. then an eagle flew by in the top left corner.
