Re: Romeo & Juliet, American Bald Eagle Cam
It looks like, there is a fight for the nest. Romeo and the strange female were in the nest, called and flew away one after the other.
11:58 the female came into the nest is calling
11:59 she flies off
12:04 Romeo has arrived, the female came in right after him. Both are calling
12:05 Romeo jumps to the right and flew away
12:07 Female flies off

13.59 there is a conflict in the nest with two eagles. I can't say who is who.
The cam stopped at my computer, i saw only the backs of the two eagles. Maybe someone else has a running stream, saw this and can report?
i had stream for another second and saw
14.04 Romeo(?) on the nest and egg, panting
I'm not even sure, if it is Romeo. But who else should it be. I don't think one of the females would lay down on the egg to incubate.
(this streaming partner drives me crazy)
EDIT 21.05 CET:
Dec 26, 9:04 PM, babyhawk_AEF (Moderator):
@1:59 pm Romeo returned with the female on his tail. He had food (squirrel) & a little scuffle ensued. There were wings flapping everywhere. Romeo mantled the food & showed aggression with her. The female did get the squirrel, & she flew off the nest with it.
Dec 26, 9:06 PM, babyhawk_AEF (Moderator):
At that point Romeo flew off but returned shortly after @2:02 pm. He laid down in the nest bowl, panting & tired from the ordeal. It is believed that he is still trying to stock the pantry, not bringing in food for her. He has since flown off again.

Really sad and tragically what happened at this nest. In my opinion Juliet is most likely not more alive, she would be back to your home and eggs. We don't know what happened out from our view, these territorial fights can be very heavy.
Poor little eaglet, you must hatched at the wrong time in a wrong place. Nature can be very hard.

Yes, they can do that, most under such circumstances...

17.27
added 0.40 CET:
17.51 (corrected, not 17.31) female eagle came to the nest, stood on the nest, loudly vocalizing
17.52 female off the nest to a branch, looking around, maybe looking for Romeo
17.54 female flies off
18.31
No Romeo seen since the dispute over the squirrel.
Will he return ? Did he leave the nest ? We will see.

Good Morning
The nest has remained empty. The AEF chat is closed.
From Cam Chat
Dec 26, 9:10 PM
LisaS_AEF (Moderator): Good Evening, Ground Crew reports two eagles were flying in nest direction at approx 5:50pm, and one stopped to perch not far from the nest. It was impossible to ID at a distance, but it was likely Romeo, as the female frequently follows him to the nest. She continued to the nest and was there briefly likely looking for food left. Nada! Romeo could possibly fly to the nest tonight as it wasn't too far.

LisaS_AEF (Moderator): If not, he will likely show up in the morning. It is not easy being on cam shift when the Hamlet has left us so empty inside, "No journey out of grief was straightforward. There would be good days and bad days." We all look forward to the good days again, we appreciate receiving a tuck report from Gretchen at this most difficult time. SED's

NEFL Eagle Nest Tragedy - Importance of unscripted live streams:
The tragedy of NE20 at the NEFL eagle nest a few hours ago is triggering lively debates on eagle behaviour and whether we are ready to accept what we are seeing. When eagle cams capture this behaviour, viewer reaction is often intensely emotional. Kleptoparasitism—obtaining food by stealing meals from other animals—or cannibalism, as we have just seen at NEFL -is a relatively common feeding strategy, and can be brutal to watch.
2:02 Nest time.. the nest is still empty, also the nest tree, so far as I could see.
They do not know, how old Romeo & Juliet are: Gretchen started monitoring the nest ten years ago, and the nest was already there, so the youngest they could be would be mid-late teens, but could be older, there's no way to know for sure.

I am afraid, that what happened at the nest of Durbe & Robert will happen here as well. Interested females were unwanted. Robert left the nest .. we never saw him again.
I really hope that Juliet is healthy and will come back when the danger is over.
She was probably too old to win the fight.
By the way, Durbe was already very old. Also there was a fight at the nest. Unfortunately in the dark and there was, thank goodness, neither eggs nor chicks in the nest.

THX Liz for clarification.
I'm streaming with VLC-Player again. Had some problems during pip/hatch watch days. After deleting vlc-programm & reinstalling these links are working better than AEFL-HDONTop...
