Lesser Spotted Eagles - Western Estonia 2019

Post by Felis silvestris »

After a gap of several years we are able to observe Lesser Spotted Eagles again.

For the moment I have only the information that the camera from the White-tailed Eagle nest was moved to this nest in Western Estonia. Not much is known about it, but Renno knows there was one chick last year.

More information will be added.

If you have a look into the WtE topic, the last few entries, you can see the "eagle" decorating the nest

Link for the WtE topic: viewtopic.php?p=641991#p641991

We all hope the birds will arrive and use the nest, it is a new location and not known for a long time. With Lesser Spotted Eagles it's always a game which nest they are going to use, as in general they have several nests and even start working on them all after arrival. We know this from previous years, when much to our joy birds arrived on the nest and started decorating it and then vanished and later in the season we heard from the ringer that they used the other nest.

At the moment the LSE are still on the way home, most of the tagged birds are, as the birdmap shows, still on their way. So chances are at least not too bad that somebody will come and use the nest.

April 10

Beautiful view! Hopefully the eagles will nest here.
The volume is quite low though.

The stream is unstable, it is on and off.

I checked Birdmap and noticed, that most of Greater Spotted eagles have reached their breeding sites or are at least in central Europe. Lesser Spotted eagles are still on their way. I know little about LSE, but I hope we will see them in this nest soon

As you can see when you click the Lesser Spotted Eagle Webcam Forum, those noisy eagles actually have a long history in our forum. As they belong to my very special interest and I would be more than happy to have the chance to watch them again. Especially on those really nice nest sites! So, once again, welcome everyone to the "little screamers", lets hope at least one couple chooses one of the camera nest!

Unfortunately the data of most of the LSE on the migration map has stopped some days ago. I hope they are closer to home, even more as the first Latvian couple has already arrived viewtopic.php?f=97&t=973 and the first German tagged birds have reached Brandenburg as well.

Either there is a switch that turns off the cam for the night or the batteries are not yet full enough to last into darkness. Not all cams work 24 hours.

Edit: I just tried, the cam opens, but it is night by now. Usual night noises of a forest can be heard when raising the sound level.

7.02-7.14 and further. Rustling, steps, digging in the leaves on the ground. Some kind of animal or person? :puzzled: The sound of the camera is intermittently interrupted.

Stream is very poor, it has gaps and really hard to get a good photo or make a video of the events  I really hope this stream will be broadcasting on Youtube aswell.
