23/24 January

~ 16:00 Samson brought half a fish for Gabrielle, that she ate on nest, then she flew off.
Samson took over incubation until she returned ~ 18:00 to take over the night shift.

~ 5:30 am poor Gabby couldn't sleep well, the whole night she was bothered by gnats.
I hope the gnats will not affect babies when hatched.

INTRUDER !!

Since ~ 13:20 there were alert callings... when Gabby was alone on incubation duty.
She even flew off. Eggs uncovered. ~10 min later Gabby returned and back on the eggs.

13:49 Gabby calling alert again
13:50 Samson arrives, both calling alert
13:53 Gabby flies off again, Samson stays guard on the branch
13:54 she returns to the nest

13:54 both calling alert
Image

Gabby back on the eggs, Samson keeps perched and both watchful.

17:22 both calling alert again, someone could be heard landing on the left out of sight
Image

intruder attacks Samson  Gabby on nest is screaming

17:22 Samson can be heard landing somewhere on the left,
Gabby is looking at him, hope he is ok
Image

17:23 Gabby still looks at Samson, the Intruder turned around on the branch,
also looking at Samson now, all are calling
Image

17:23 Intruder flies off to the right

Oh no, another attack, above, midair, almost out of sight. One went down, one is on a branch above, Gabby on the eggs is screaming. The one from above flies down, following the other.
Cam scans to the ground, but nothing to see from Samson and the intruder. All quiet.
Gabby looks around and backwards.

17:37 Gabby is calling excitedly, she sees someone, cam is panning again to the ground on the left, an eagle is calling, too. I hope it is Samson and he is not injured

AEF NEFL Eagle Nest Chat:

jd_AEF (Moderator): Sam and Gabby announcing it is 8 pm and all is well in the Hamlet.

jd_AEF (Moderator): Gabby up at 8:40 pm to roll eggs and she and Samson have another conversation about their night. ♥ She is back down again.

gretchen_AEF (Admin): Sunday Tuck-In: Whew, it wasn't a usual calm day in the Hamlet today. Most of the afternoon Gabby was in the nest vocalizing and Samson was perched on LOP. It’s unusual they would both be at the nest together all afternoon. It was apparent they (Gabby especially) was irritated about something. There was likely an intruder in the area but not approaching the nest. . .until chat. The intruder flew into Samson with a purpose. They both flew off. (continued)

gretchen_AEF (Admin): Then Gabby flew off as well, as she knew they were chasing the eagle out of the nest area and could safely and briefly leave the eggs. Our Samson was quite the hero and has remained perched faithfully guarding his precious cargo. At this time Samson is preening and Gabby is exhausted. This is our first intruder encounter this season. Let's hope it's the last! They have both proven they can handle adversity with success. We expect it to be a peaceful night. SED to our Hamlets and to all! ❤

21:28 all again fine in the pine
you both deserve a good peaceful sleep now

February 7th

Gabby's a little tired.

Image

"Gabrielle's parental instincts and perseverance are once more on full display during a storm at the NEFL nest last night. It started out with the wind, then the rains came and she was drenched but kept her NE22 and NE23 safe and warm throughout. At 1:06 am she finally stood up and shook off the rain, rolled her sweet eggs, and back to sleep, keeping them ever safe!"

Intruder nearby. Gabrielle toughly defends nests and eggs.

I wonder how the first-time parents will manage to raise eaglets. Sometimes reactions to the hatchling are surprising (Long Island Osprey cam - video by Lady Hawk)

Last season in the Estonian osprey nest we witnessed presumably a first timer osprey female Iiris, who managed excellently her first season as an parent and raised 3 healthy chicks with help of her spouse Ivo :headroll:

...and Gabby seems to have very good instincts. Even as she watched over the spawn of Romeo and Juliet. Although it wasn't her eggs.
She seems to be a very balanced and good girl.
