Re: Goshawk nest in Riga 2020
Abigyl, good morning
No, I don't mind at all - on the contrary. I am happy when many members share their observations and opinions. Many eyes see more and I have days when I can hardly document. At the moment it is.
I tend to overlook important little things in my hurry.
Thank you for every help!

May 23rd
04:00 Everything is still calm. Boka protects her sleeping chicks.
04:17
05:09 Boka decides that the day should start. It starts to fidget under her breast .... She leaves the nest.
05:11 Boka comes back with a call and food. Button eye (the older chick) is immediately ready for breakfast. Little one is a little sluggish.

Spaghetti for breakfast.
Little one tried it and in the second attempt managed to take the broken one. Overall, the button eye was a little more alert when feeding and accordingly picked up more bites.
05:19 Breakfast has ended and everyone is helping to clear up the food crumbs.
Almost all ...
05:20 Boka flies to a branch, stays there for a few seconds and then leaves the nest. (05:21)
It is good to imagine that this branch will soon be used by the young goshawks when they start to leave the nest.

*look behind :)
Little one is looking for the proximity of his older sibling and soon they have found their optimal cuddle position. 2nd round sleep ...
(Hawks consolidate their territory through territorial calls and sightseeing flights. I always suspected that they would be as quiet and unobtrusive as possible so as not to give themselves away. Wrong thought. )
05:24 Boka is back and almost as usual she brings some fresh green.

Don't want to hear or see anything ...
Feet in the sun ...
06:54:45 Boka tracks something with her eyes and flies away silently. In their absence, button eyes take care of the feathers. Nice to look at. :)
07:05 Boka is back with food. A crane chick? It looks like a water bird.
I think Boka hit it himself. The bird is fresh, still very soft. In the last minutes of their last war the other of the other birds in the area were palpable. Even now, the alarm level is still difficult to calm down.

07:08 Boka is still on the nesting beach. The chicks are interested in the feed. First little one crawls on the nesting beach. Then back into the bowl. It does the same for him.

07:14 No more feeding yet.
Boka is relaxed.
07:56 Boka works deep in the nest bowl. Does she bury the eggs? I saw correctly and there is only one egg left?
I have to go to work.

10:29 My scrolling time is unfortunately limited.
In the meantime there is more feed in the nest. Was Lui finally active?
Boka seems to prefer a different position in the nest today. Does it have anything to do with the position of the sun or simply comfort? It can only be speculated.
I hear twittering and human voices ... it sounds normal and peaceful.
Boka is still clearing.
11:00
11:09 Boka is on the nest edge, then briefly on her branch and finally leaves the nest.
Yes, an egg was buried. Now I can definitely see it.
And this is where the moment comes when I would like help. I documented this moment before I had to interrupt my observation. There are sounds that I can not define but that concern me!
I will try to make another video ....
Command back ... I activated my headphones and found - it was a moody child.
Oh sorry !!!
I thought it was a tortured animal.
My children are barely out of their teenage shoes. I had already suppressed these noises.

11:13: Boka is back and the chicks are fed.
Hm...
Well, little one is very active again this time and is in no way subordinate to his older sibling.
A monster bite protrudes from the side of the beak.
11:25 Boka is very attentive during feeding. It may be due to the lively environment. A lot of acoustic stimuli at the moment.

12:34 ... a grass trimmer and a song come to the nest "Are you ready" ...
Hm, don't look like that right now. But see how our chicks find their own position.
12:48 "Hey brother ... hey sister ..." it sounds out of the music - box.
Yes ... maybe. Do we have a brother and sister here?
Boka gave her chicks space in the nest from 12:47 - 12:52 and woke up on the branch.

12:52 Boka jumps back into the nest.
She offers food but her kids are completely uninterested. Button eye, who was standing on the edge of the nest, even crawls back into the cozy bowl.
She picks up the food and leaves the nest.
Does he regret?

13:32 Boka is back on her post. So nice to see the chicks when they have room for their development. Sleep, marvel, clean ...
13:31 We now count 1.5 eggs

I run back the day and find pictures that I can't choose between.
Boka and her chicks are going through a process of first release. And everyone is enjoying it.
15:15
15:31
Button eye watches over the nesting edge. Little one cuddles with mom.
15:50 Boka and the older button eye dress up in a duet.

16:21 Boka flies on her branch. She can only stand it there for a few seconds. It returns to the nest. She is noticeably drawn to Little one. She has her eyes on the little chick ... she heads for it with determination and has the need to protect it. What a moment .... If you consider that there was no reason. Little one seems surprised himself.
Boka ... you are great.

I don't think we need to worry about poops and feeding here. Such a lovely nest ... .

18:18 Buttoneye defies teenage life and looks for his younger sibling.
19:11 Button eye cleans the green ... or yourself?
I miss Lui. Unfortunately, it only plays a background role. Boka protects and hunts itself. For his protection.
Snoring noses ...

20:15 Wake up call
Boka moves like a child's room. She doesn't know which is better - let the chaos rest or try to save life.
She does what I would have done ...

It seems to me that today is a special day. Day of change. I still miss Lui. Of course I have gaps in my winding. But I always had ... anyway, Lui of love was always there.
.....
22:05
Does Boka miss him too?

22:34 ... my last screenshot. I haven't had a single feeding. That makes me wonder.
Did I scroll sloppy? But they are fine. I am sure of that.

Good morning,
They seem to be doing really well , and what a great peaceful nest.
Is it common practice for the male (Lui) to ‘back off’ from duties once the chicks are of a certain age/size and leave the majority of the work to the female bird (Boka) for all Goshawk nests ?
