My federal state, Bavaria, has the first loosenings for shopping since today. Hardware stores and Garden Markets are allowed to open again for public.

Next week other shops will follow, but only those which are smaller than 800 qm.
But also with next week we will have to wear masks when going shopping or using public transportation. Until now it was only a recommendation.
The problem is, like in many other countries, that we still don´t have FFP2 or FFP3 masks for everyone.
Our government told us, that so called "community masks" are possible as well, also a scarf or a bandana or anything like this.

I am already sewing masks since a while, for family and friends, neighbours (for the friendly ones :whistling: ) .....
Can´t sew replenishment as quick as they are asked for .... and my eyes are dead tired in the evenings
and then I see only swirls Image

My husbands´ mask model is the one with the pinky flowers on it :D But he still looks a bit like Hannibal Lecter, despite the pink flowers
He asked me to find a fabric with skulls and roses for his model :faint:

nice fabrics Bea!

about the masks:
in Finland the health officials the use is not recommended but they can't deny people wearing masks either. they keep reminding that there are several reasons why the masks might even be harmful if they are not specially made for the purpose or are not worn correctly. i have not seen many people wearing them, but on the other hand i have mostly stayed at home.
i have acquired two patterns for sewing a mask but so far i haven't made any.

in Finland the recommendations of WHO are followed.

Dear Mr. Bea.

I don't have any fabric of your choice, skulls and roses, but I do have some dull, boring blue/grey polycotton size 2.5M x 1.14M
If you can survive the dullnesss of this fabric I will post it to your place on the planet. It may take a week.
Ask Bea to advise me of your choice.

No protection with self-made respiratory protection

BfArM = Federal Institute for Pharmaceuticals and Medical Products

There is no protection, but is recommended for private use. What's the point? It doesn't protect me, it doesn't protect others, but it should be worn.

Oh what a nice offer, dear Jo!
I will tell Mr. Bea about this opportunity to get a business-like, decent face mask

Meanwhile I found some leftover pieces of the fabric he had in mind, it was from a quilt I sew for my son many years ago .... fabric tastes are different here in my family

it's impossible to think that the coming year could not be an improvement to the gone year. it must be getting better when people get their vaccinations. :2thumbsup:

one Finnish Christmas tradition is baking and building gingerbread houses. the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat arranges a competition of gingerbread houses every year before Christmas where people send pictures of the houses they have built. the editorial staff selects works for finalists and then readers vote for their favourite house. the competition has separate classes for adults and children. this year the theme of the competition was "The exceptional year".
you can have a look at the finalists here:

if you scroll down you will see bigger individual pictures of the finalists, first 10 children's works and then 10 constructions in the adults' series.

the winning work of the adults' class was called "the office at home ".

the winner Nina Wickstrand tells that she made a naturalistic replica of a real situation when she had to find a peaceful place for a video conference at home. the place she chose was the sauna.

the winning work in the childrens' category was called "In the shop". the word 'loppu' means 'sold out', 'WC-paperi' = 'toilet paper' and 'säilykkeet' means 'canned food'.

the winner of the children's category was the 11-year old Liisi Tuominen.
