Ah ...

10:28:48 A hawk (gray plumage) flies away from the tree top (or neighbor tree) downwards. Followed by a crow.
They fly over the peaks of the left group of trees on the horizon.

Slower ...

February 3rd

Good morning together :hi:

It is almost mild in Riga, currently -1°C. But for the next few days, winter is coming back with a vengeance. Temperatures can fall back to -17°C.

07:39:06 - 11
07:40:43 - 48 Call Goshawk

Both calls from close distance.

07:57:13 'Gjak' ?
07:57:16 /18 Short call, I think also Goshawk

First a good day to you all! :innocent:

08:57:08 The crows are getting loud and there is a lot of flight movement in the sky again. However, the people involved are not well visible to me.
08:57:49 A crow was probably sitting in the nest tree and cursing into my headphones. I was startled. :D

09:35:31 -35 Interesting call.
Three question marks remain on my forehead.

11:21:16 also 11:21:50 It sounds like a short youthful call.
11:21:52 .... the echo comes from the factory floor. Human whistling. :whistling:

11:24 The jay begins to call. It can be heard for a very long time.
In between 11:25:55 it sounded like a juvenile call again.

It remains unfortunately without visits of the Goshawks in the nest but they are there. And it remains interesting - for me even if the question marks become more and more.
At least they can be seen or heard closer to the nest in the last days. Some time ago their calls were mostly far away. Probably closer to the new eyrie.

Floppy Fish, if you're still reading along....
I had doubts because of the pointed wing shape. In the meantime I have looked at some comparisons and cleared all doubts for me. It is a goshawk that elegantly takes off .... fascinating.
PS: ...yet an adult plumage. :innocent:
Still a great snapshot from you!!! Thanks again!

17:43:29/30 A bird moves away in the immediate vicinity. Or is it coming? A sleeper?
I can't see anything but I hear the beat of its wings. Quiet, soft ... but powerful and fast . :innocent:

Whenever possible, I wear headphones. It is really recommendable. I would have missed a lot without this.
Do you listen to it too?

18:24:39/43 A sound I have otherwise heard similar only in Barn Owls nests.
My thoughts jump back to the afternoon when I thought I heard an owl not for the first time.

(I caught the wrong video ... sorry. Right now.)

https://www.deutsche-vogelstimmen.de/schleiereule/

It is confusing at many moments.
Here it is interesting how close animals live with humans.
But it's also difficult as an observer to separate the sounds between wildlife and civilization on camera. I hear an owl and in reality it is a snow shovel. :slap:
It would be liberating if others also somewhat share or correct my observations. Until then, all the draws of the day are without guarantee. :D

And a good night to all!
With fireworks from Riga (there are always some  ) and some snow from northern Germany.

February 4th

Hello everyone!

The nest looked very rumpled this morning when I opened the camera.

The culprit was quickly found. A beautiful specimen of a marten (pine marten?) was a guest in the hawk nest in the early morning hours.

05:45:30 he comes from the left into the nest.
The neighbor's dog strikes like crazy. He probably noticed the uninvited guest, too.

The marten sniffs and digs through the snow. In between he jumps on the parent branch, climbs under the nest ... inspects micro and the plant.

Image

Image

05:51:50 The marten leaves the nest without hoped-for prey.
It looks like a field of rubble. :slap: He probably burrowed a little deeper and pulled out a thick branch ....

What would Boka and Luijs say to this.

It's a good thing there were no eggs or chicks in the nest at the moment. I wonder if a goshawk could drive off a marten?

07:38:13 almost exactly like yesterday an adult call. Today a little further away.

11:49 Crows approaching, cursing and gurgling.

11:49:12 A crackle in the nest tree. Sounds like a bird has landed.

11:49:13 - 17 Yes! :innocent: Immediately followed by the call of the goshawk.
I didn't hear it fly away again.I think it's still there.

I guess it was a quiet day.

I have now reeled a bit, but what can I say ... it snows and snows and snows ....

Image

07:47:40 - 45 An adult call. A little further away today.

The hawks overslept - by 10 minutes.

Otherwise nothing was or I overwinded it. That's always the risk.

I have a little more time in the next few days, but I'm afraid any mood will be stifled in winter weather. Our animals may shut down their energies in order to survive.
It gets terribly cold, the blanket of snow makes it difficult to hunt and find, and these are the times when I am grateful that my fridge is full and that I have a warm home. No, I don't want to be a wild animal that has to fight so hard for its survival during this time.

Maybe see you soon and all the best for people and animals! :innocent:

Short update so that we don't freeze here ... .

Currently, the temperature in Riga is -9°C. Temperatures of -19°C are also expected in the next few days. That is already very hard.

The nests will certainly be covered by a thick blanket of snow and it will be interesting to see how alert or restrained our birds are.

Well, yesterday almost to the minute reliably again 07:48:26 -30 the adult call sounded.

Earlier, 07:40:34 the crows 'reared' again. Followed by the scolding of a blackbird and the drumming of a woodpecker.
I don't have much else to report.

Today ...

I spent too much time winding the morning.
The usual phone call failed to materialise. I didn't want to believe it and searched for a long time and again .... nothing.

Yes, there were repeated moments of nagging crows but no sign that a hawk was the cause.

Finally, 13:52:48 - 52 the call of a hawk. Clear and quite close. :innocent:

I wasted a lot of time and got into live mode too late. Maybe there was a call before.
Anyway ... everything is OK in the territory.

14:36:21 it cracks and cycles. I don't pay any attention to the sound at first. It cracks all the time.
14:36:36 But movement comes into the nest tree.

I would love to finally show a goshawk again, but the only thing left for this season is probably the luck of seeing them by chance during their forays through the territory or the acoustic pleasure.
Which will continue to exist. If the camera stays open, we will hear their chicks in the summer.
I think ... . :D :book: ... I hope so.

Haven't heard a call yet today but a hawk is sitting in the tree. :loveshower:

09:01:29 The Goshawk flies into the nest tree from the left.

Image

He is hidden but moving in the tree.

Arrival in slow motion:
(The moment when he is best seen).

(His whole stay this evening in full length)
Edit: I'll add it as the last post in the day.

09:04:31 He flies away to the left.
Edit: instead of the long video here the last seconds in the tree and leaving in slow motion.
You can see it over the fork of the branch.

09:05:17 A crow flies through the nest tree.

11:06:34 - 40 seagulls howling
11:06:43 - 46 A coctail of several sounds but I think that '46 - '49 is the juvenile voice of a goshawk.

11:07:54 A bird flies to the nest tree, lands. I have to check it first.

Image

Image

Hm, no banding on the tail feathers and he looks too round for me.
More crow than goshawk. Or?

No more time to brood. I have to end for today. Have a safe day, everyone!

The day was exhausting and stupid. I'm too tired of checking out all of the missed hours.
Nevertheless now my joy and the hawk in the tree - uncensored.
Not much happens, but he's been there for a long time .... :innocent:

Well, you see them now more often on the nest tree than you can hear them.
For example, this morning ... no calling. Suddenly he was there.
There is often rustling and cracking in the nest tree and you can hear that there are no tits. They may be there more often than I catch them.
Why ... I don't know. The Goshawk keep confusing me. It is actually clear to me that there is a couple and they will not use this nest tree this season.

New knowledge every day .... I'm curious.

Have it fine and stay safe and confident! :2thumbsup:

February 9th

A quiet day again but I try to be calm. It is bitterly cold and I ask myself more and more why so many animals have their courtship season in the middle of winter. Actually, they should conserve their energy.

Well, it actually calmed down. I am spoiled by the persistence of the calls and try not to question why the usual morning call was still missing today.

Look and see what happens .... 8-)

12:44:51 A bird leaves the nest tree.
It had cracked in the tree beforehand and so he was probably there until then.

Hm, it disappeared behind the LDF logo. :dunno: Maybe it would be better placed on the lower right corner. There the area is already pixelated and hardly relevant.

Blackbird, (to big) crow? ... not recognizable. To me.

15:31:39 - 42 Finally a call!

My mood is restored.

February 11th

:hi:

High winter temperatures in Riga but our goshawks are very actively flying through their territory in the most beautiful sunshine and can often be heard so far.

The nest is studded with diamonds for the lady. It looks so beautiful ... .
:innocent:
Image

07:23 Crows start their morning nagging.

07:24:18 -23 Call Goshawk, near
07:24:58 A nearby crackle (as also 07:21).

07:26:58 Cracking
07:27:01 - 06 Call Goshawk, very close ...no sighting

08:19:00 - 03 Call Goshawk, near

09:02 Woodpecker drums

11:11:42 -49 Call Goshawk, dumb close but again not to be seen.
(In this case a longer call. Three times in a row, otherwise usually two.)

Well, their calls have been getting closer for some time (about 2 weeks?).
While they were barely heard or seen before, they have come very close to the nest tree again.

12:00:37 / 49 Squawking of a Jay

12:03:42 - 44 Call Goshawk, here directly ...near
(Before that, nagging crows can be heard approaching. 12:03:39/40 Just before the call, a gentle rustling of wings).

Where are they?
Their calls are extremely close today. And often...

15:39:22 - 15:40:39 The jay croaks to himself.

This is followed by a crows versus hawk match.

15:47:40 Crows can be heard.
Sounded angry, gargle and get closer.

Pay attention to the sky in the video ... there are many. :slap:

15:45:51 The pursued hawk flies through the nest. He / she knows.
The crows passed it.

I can't tell if there were two goshawks involved.

And again this nest tree.
I'm more concerned with the question of the currently preferred nest - do we have a couple? :puzzled:

No pairing noises whatsoever. But I probably wouldn't even realize it. It sounds like a seagull screeching. And seagulls howl here all day.

I don't have time to follow the camera tomorrow. I rely on you!
