bigfan wrote: December 6th, 2021, 7:35 am … We do not know why little Katrin does not fly further in the sun .. I would just like to ask- can she survive in this area at all?
:faint:
I don't know, Bigfan.
The Bakırçay Plain is an atypical wintering location anyway. But as long as Katrin finds enough food, she should be able to winter in this area, I think. The winters here are very rainy (maybe too much rain for BS), but the temperatures remain mild enough. I assume that Katrin would decide to move further south as soon as she no longer likes this area or gets hungry. Katrin is about 7 months old, and it is likely that she has improved her fishing skills by now. She is gradually gaining experience.
Let’s see what happens, and hope for the best.

Edit:
A study to determine the fish species living in the Bakırçay River and its small tributaries (source) was recently carried out.

Fish fauna of Bakırçay Stream (North Eagean, Turkey)
Ali İlhan, Hasan M. Sarı, Irmak Kurtul
Article in Ege Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences · October 2020

“This study was carried out to determine the current fish fauna of Bakırçay River in seasonal periods between 2017 and 2018. Sampling was carried out in 15 different locations, 11 lotic (actively moving water) and 4 lentic (slowly moving, still water) locations, from the small streams of source of the river to the downstream region. The sampling was performed with “Samus 725 G” model electroshock in lotic habitats; with standard fishing-nets which was “TS EN 14757 Water Quality” in lentic habitats. As a result of the study, the presence of 17 taxa from 7 families including Anguillidae, Atherinidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinidae, Nemacheilidae, Poecilidae and Gobiidae were determined. Mugilidae family members and Salaria pavo species, which were previously reported within the stream, were not obtained in our study. However, the presence of 6 species, namely Atherina boyeri, Cyprinus carpio, Carassius gibelio, Oxynemacheilus teophili, Gambusia holbrooki and Knipowitschia caucasica species were found in this study for the first time. Cyprinidae family with 11 taxa was the biggest family in terms of species diversity in the river basin. Anguillidae, Atherinidae, Cobitidae, Nemacheilidae, Poecilidae and Gobiidae families are represented by one taxon. In order to protect the river's biodiversity and to maintain fishing activities effectively, the pollution sources should be overcomed firstly. In order to protect the biodiversity of the river and to maintain fishing activities effectively, first of all, pollution sources and exotic fish species that may have negative effects on the natural fish fauna of the basin should be brought under control. In addition, it will also be useful to organize events to inform local governments and community about the importance and protection of aquatic environments.”

This morning, Katrin was still in the same area on the ditch southeast of Bergama, İzmir Province, Turkey.

Did Katrin spent the night on a tree near the little road, close by the cattle farm?
It is likely, but we didn’t receive enough data to know for sure.

BAKIRÇAY NEHRİ - BAKIRÇAY RİVER
© By BİSİKLET - KARAVAN - OLTA SEVDALISI

”BAKIRÇAY RIVER, the largest river of the North Aegean, is one of our great rivers formed by the feeding of tributaries within the borders of Manisa and İzmir provinces.
The river, which starts around the Soma region of Manisa and travels down the plain, first flows through the district of Kınık, which is one of the lowland districts, then through the district of Bergama, and finally flows into the Aegean Sea through the Çandarlı Gulf. The plain on the route it passes is called the BAKIRÇAY PLAIN.”

Edit:
In the above video, the river Bakırçay is quite fast flowing along this stretch but there are probably spots which are more shallow and still.

Many thanks, Sova and Hellem! :D
It is so good to know that Timmu sent data, and is (was on 04.11) still in his usual wintering area, looking for food in the Atbarah River and its tributaries.

KATRIN - morning update 08.12

Distance flown: 581 m
Battery at 08:33 (UTC+2): 32%

Katrin is still near Sucahlı, Kınık district, İzmir province, Turkey
It looks like she spent the night at the ditch (or brook), probably in a tree next to it.
In the morning she flew to the edge of the village and is near the houses/farms.

Thank you, Jo!

On December 8th, KATRIN flew about 15 km.
She flew from Sucahlı to Yayakent, from Yayakent to ’her’ fields near the river Bakırçay, then she crossed the Bakırçay Plain northwards. She seems very restless to me. Couldn't she find a suitable place to feed?

December 9th
MORNING UPDATE KATRIN

Distance flown: 421 m
Battery level at 08:35 (UTC+2): 30%

This morning, Katrin was still in the same area northeast of Bergama and flew to a farm just north of her night shelter.
I hope she finds enough food in these ditches. Maybe she should check the food supply in the wetlands of the Bakırçay Delta again... ?
